Joseph Faiveley Volnay is a red Burgundy produced from grapes grown in the prestigious appellation of Volnay in Burgundy’s Cote de Beaune wine-growing region. The village of Volnay sits high above the Burgundian plain just a stones throw away from its neighbour Pommard. From the village’s square its possible to look across the region as far as the snow capped Mont Blanc. The wines are elegant and well-structured with delicate red and black fruits of the forest flavours and a floral bouquet said to resemble violets.
Domaine Faiveley was founded in 1825 by Pierre Faiveley and has passed through seven generations of the the family since then. The company headquarters can be found in Nuit St Georges and has been run since 2007 by Erwan Faiveley. Today the family owns over 120 hectares of vineyards in Burgundy including 10 hectares of grand cru vineyards, nearly 25 hectares of 1er cru vineyards and other vineyards including 68 hectares in the Cote Chalonnaise. An impressive 80% of Domaine Faiveley’s wines are made from fruit grown in the family’s vineyards. Vineyard acquisition has also been a focus of Erwan’s tenure with 20 hectares in Gevrey Chambertin added in 2013 including vines in both Charmes-Chambertin and Lavaux Saint Jacques. Faiveley keep yields to a minimum through the controlled use of organic fertiliser, strict pruning, the development of rootstocks suited to specific soil types together with a high average vine age in the Faiveley vineyards.
Wine produced under the Joseph Faiveley label are a product of fruit sourced by the negociant arm of the business, in many cases, from some of the top vineyards in Burgundy. Joseph Faiveley Volnay offers excellent ageing potential which will benefit from being left to mature in the bottle in order to reveal its full potential.
Joseph Faiveley Volnay has a deep scarlet red hue. The nose has aromas of opens up with black fruits, spice and subtle toasted notes. The attack is elegant and refined and the palate is characterised by floral notes and a touch of mocha.
The perfect match for Beef Bourguignon, beef tartare, game dishes and mature, hard cheeses.
