Description

La Croix de Beaucaillou is produced by Chateau Ducru Beaucaillou which was classified as a second growth in the historic Bordeaux Classification of 1855. It is one of the most famous Chateau in the St Julien wine-growing appellation. It is made from parcels of wine from a separate and distinct vineyard to the grand vin on the northern part of the estate near Chateau Leoville Barton.

Chateau Ducru Beaucaillou is a majestic, Victorian-style castle, which has, over time, become one of the great symbols of the Médoc. The estate was purchased by Francois Borie in 1941. Today, the estate is managed by Jean Eugène Borie SA, which is owned by Mrs Borie, her daughter Sabine Coiffe and her son Bruno-Eugène, the CEO since 2003, and the third generation of the Borie family to head the estate. The family also own two other famous Bordeaux estates: Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste and Château Haut-Batailley. The estate comprises some 50 hectares of vineyards situated on well-drained gravel with stones of up to 2.5cm in diameter. Indeed, the name Beaucaillou translates literally as “beautiful stones”. The vineyards are planted with 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot.

La Croix de Beaucaillou is is a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon and 25% Merlot, matured in 60% new oak and the rest, one-year old.

Chateau Ducru Beaucaillou La Croix de Beaucaillou was given a revamp in 2009 with a newly designed Jade Jagger label. In recent years, the production of Chateau Ducru Beaucaillou has been deliberately decreased by about 50%. More of the wine that was destined for the grand vin will now find it’s way into La Croix de Beaucaillou.
