Lavradores de Feitoria 8 Bagos Tinto a red wine from the Douro. It is made from a blend of 8 different grape varieties, hence “8 Bagos”.
The highly regarded Lavradores de Feitoria co-operative was founded in 2000 by a group of like-minded owners of some of the best vineyards and quintas in the Douro Valley, with a clear and strong commitment to excellence. Initially it was an association of 15 owners of 18 Quintas spread throughout the best terroirs in the three sub-regions of the Douro region. Today the company has 53 shareholders (of which 16 are producers), and 19 Quintas, plus one Quinta – Medronheiro – bought in 2008 with own capital. Together, they have a total area of vineyard of more than 600 hectares.
The main objective of Lavradores de Feitoria is to bring together the expertise and diverse vineyard holdings of wine-growers to create high-quality wines that showcase the unique terroir of the Douro region. By pooling their resources and sharing knowledge, the winemakers aimed to produce wines that reflect the distinct characteristics of the individual vineyards while capturing the essence of the Douro Valley as a whole.
Today there are 20 estate owners from all three Douro sub-regions (Baixo Corgo, Cima Corgo and Douro Superior). The winery’s vineyards are spread across the Douro Valley, encompassing a wide range of microclimates and soil types. This diversity allows Lavradores de Feitoria to cultivate a variety of grape varieties, both indigenous and international, including Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca, and others. Feitoria produce two different styles of wine. “Blended wines” made from a rigorous selection of grapes sourced from different quintas and “Terroir wines” which reflect the character and the individuality of a specific vineyard. 8 Bagos falls into the former category.
The grapes are sourced from various vineyards from members of the cooperative planted along the Douro Valley that have an average age of 25 to 30 years. Lavradores de Feitoria 8 Bagos Tinto is blend of Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Barroca, Tinta Roriz, Tinto Cão, Tinta Amarela, Sousão and Tinta Francisca. The wine fermented in stainless steel and is then aged for 12 months in 2nd fill French oak barrels which adda a bit of spice and complexity to a super, fruity core.
Lavradores de Feitoria 8 Bagos Tinto is ruby red colour. It has a fine and delicate nose of soft ripe black fruits, revealing aromas of cherry, ripe plum and cassis. It is simultaneously fresh and silky on the palate, with soft tannins and spicy notes. Fresh, smooth and harmonious, it has a long and juicy flavourful finish.
