Description

Martue is a relatively new Bodega created by wine grower Fausto Gonzales with backing from some rather wealthy businessmen. The idea behind the project was to create Castillian wine “fit for a king.” The main varieties planted at Martue are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Tempranillo and Chardonnay. Martue Especial 2003 is a blend of Merlot, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon from Martue’s Campo Martuela vineyards at La Guardia de Toledo. Martue Especial is aged for 12 months in new French oak.

Tasting Notes

Martue Especial is rich, ripe and jammy with a preponderance of red fruits (cherries) and hints of dark chocolate. The palate is full, round and clean, the oak flavours intermingling with ripe red fruit. The tannins are soft and the finish is persistent. All in all the wine is very rich and full – 2003 was a very hot year in Europe but the wine appears to be made well and there is a good bit of acidity to balance the wine.

Drink With

Martue Especial matches really well with a bit of red meat, barbeques or even hard cheeses such as a good mature cheddar.
