Description

Maud Heath Tytherton Red is an English Quality Wine made by Maud Heath Vineyards.

The vineyard is located in at Wick Bridge Farm in Wiltshire between the villages of Tytherton and Bremhill overlooking Maud Heath’s Causeway. The causeway is a four and a half mile long raised pathway which was gifted to the region by Maud Heath (died 1474) which would allow the local residents to transport their goods to Chippenham Market without getting their feet wet in the flooded fields around the River Avon.

This small, boutique vineyard is owned by the Bateman family and who first began planting vines in 2006. This was soon followed by more planting in 2008 followed by Pinot Noir planting in 2011. They have Chardonnay, Pinot Meunier and Pinot Noir planted as well as some Bacchus and Rondo. There are some 6 hectares of vineyards planted.

Maud Heath Tytherton Red is made by Litmus wines who are based at Denbies Wine Estate in Surrey under the careful eye of chief winemaker John Worontschak assisted by the internationally experienced French winemaker Matthieu Elzinga.  Maud Heath Tytherton Red is a blend of Pinot Noir and Rondo grapes. Pinot Noir requires little introduction. Rondo is a  a dark-skinned grape variety, a cross of the varieties Zarya Severa and St. Laurent created in 1964. It is a variety that has a good resistance to winter frosts and is known for its ability to ripen even in Northern European countries. Pinot Noir is the main component of the blend but the Rondo adds a bit of power and ripeness. The wine is aged for 5 months in French oak barrels.

Serve With

Try with roast chicken, roast beef or perhaps some charcuterie.

Tasting Notes

Maud Heath Tytherton Red is a deep red crimson colour with aromas of cassis and red plum on the nose. The palate is medium bodied with a soft, silky texture and a subtle hint of spice from the oak, which leads to a long lingering finish.
