Description

Miguel Torres Conde de Superunda is a red wine blend from Curico and sits alongside the 100% Cabernet Sauvignon Manso de Velasco as Miguel Torres Chile’s two top red wines. Whereas the Manso de Valesco demonstrates what can be done with old vine Cabernet Sauvignon in Chile, the Superunda demonstrates the skill of the winemaker in blending different grape varieties to produce something really special.

Familia Torres Wines first acquired a small winery in Curicó, in the Chilean Central Valley, in 1979. It was the first foreign company to back Chilean vineyard production. After almost thirty years, those original 100 hectares have turned into 445 hectares of vineyards owned by the company itself. The excellent climate conditions for cultivating grape vines, with great temperature differences between night and day and lands free of grape phylloxera, have contributed to the fact that sublime wines are being made in lands from where one can view the greatness of the Andes, crowned by snow and noble beauty. As of 2010, Miguel Torres Chile is directed by Miguel Torres Maczassek, a fifth-generation Torres winemaker who moved to Chile with his family to maintain the tradition and passion for winemaking that the Torres family has demonstrated for over a hundred years.

Miguel Torres Conde de Superunda is a blend of 59% Tempranillo, 21% Monastrell 16% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Carmenere all harvested in the Curico valley. The vineyards are located on soils of fluvial and alluvial origin, very deep clay loam, with the presence of small rounded clasts at different depths. Moderately acidic pH, with very low fertility. The grapes undergo a maceration period of 30 days followed by an 8 day alcoholic fermentation at 27-29C. It is aged for 22 months in new French (Nevers) oak barrels.

The name Superunda refers to the action of Spanish nobleman, José Antonio Manso de Velasco, during the tragic tsunami in El Callao, Lima, in 1746, where he used his wooden ships to help save the population affected by the great sea surge. The King of Spain himself awarded Manso de Velasco with the noble title Count of Superunda in 1748 which translates as “above the waves.”

Tasting Notes

The Miguel Torres Conde de Superunda 2010 offers a dense and inviting nose with aromas of dark fruit jam, like plum and blueberry, alongside hints of toasted bread, balsam wood, tobacco, and cedar. The palate is full-bodied and fleshy, revealing ripe fruit jam flavours, tobacco, and a touch of spice. Well-integrated tannins contribute to a smooth and lingering finish. This mature and complex wine showcases Chilean winemaking quality, harmonizing fruit, spice, and oak in a structured wine that likely still has ageing potential.

Food Pairing

It pairs well with rich dishes like roasted meats, game or hearty stews.

Good with hard mature cheeses such as Gouda, Cheddar or Gruyere.
