Nederburg Ingenuity is a red wine blend of Sangiovese (45.5%), Barbera (45.5%) and Nebbiolo (9%).
Nederburg has a long wine-making history stretching back over 200 years to 1791 when Phillipus Bernadus Wolvaart was granted ownership of 49 hectares of land, in what is now Paarl, by the Dutch East India Company. He called his new property Nederburgh and immediately set about clearing land and planting vines. By 1808 he had planted over 63,000 vines laying the foundations for what was to become the wine company we know today. Nederburg has changed hands many times through the years but was owned by the large South African wine and spirit company, Distell, for many years. Most recently, in 2023, Distell was taken over by Heineken and integrated into Heineken Beverages, a company created by the merger of Distell and Namibia Breweries. Since 2021 the team at Nederburg has been led by cellar master, and seasoned winemaker, Samuel Viljoen. he is ably assisted by winemakers Zinaschke Steyn, Imellia Prins and Jamie Williams. Nederburg remains one of South Africa’s most awarded wineries and their wines display a hallmark combination of fruit and finesse.
Ingenuity is Nederburg’s platform for innovation and houses exciting new blends made from lesser-known varietals or those combined in interesting new ways. As the name Ingenuity suggests, Nederburg’s new showcase ensemble of novel blended wines is an expression of skilled and inventive winemaking intended to explore new pleasures of taste. The Sangiovese grapes were sourced from dryland vineyards in the Groenekloof ward in Darling, the source of some of the country’s leading quality grapes. The Barbera grapes were sourced from the cool-climate area of Durbanville, and the Nebbiolo grapes from the high slopes of Simondium. All the fruit was hand-harvested. Medium-sized barrels were used to impart a gentle wood influence. The wine was racked twice, first after three months and then again, after 12 months, when the blend was composed. The blend itself spent an additional eight months in wood. After gentle fining, the wine was bottled and received no filtration.
Nederburg Ingenuity Sangiovese / Barbera / Nebbiolo Blend is a bright, ruby colour with flashes of red garnet. The nose has romas of spice, ripe blackberry, cherry and plum with a hint of liquorice. The palate has spice and ripe fruit characteristics which combine on the palate of this muscular wine with fresh tannins but a subtle oaking. Supple, elegant yet full-flavoured, the finish is long and lingering.
Nederburg Ingenuity Sangiovese / Barbera / Nebbiolo Blend is excellent served with saucy dishes made from a reduction of fresh tomatoes, with finely sliced rare beef, Italian cured meats or charcuterie.
