Niepoort Turris was first released with the 2012 vintage and it sits above Niepoort’s Batuta and Charme as their flagship wine.
Niepoort was founded as a Port House in 1842 and today is run by the 5th generation winemaker Dirk van der Niepoort. Whilst Niepoort is very well known for their superb Port wines, they are now considered to be one of the top Portuguese producers of table wines. Dirk really was at the forefront of the Portuguese wine revolution. He first started experimenting with wines in 1990 and released his first red table wine, Niepoort Redoma Tinto in 1991. Dirk continues to experiment and innovate and produces some fantastic Douro wines as well as from relatively newly acquired vineyards in Bairrada and Dao. All of the red wines, with the exception of the Niepoort Charme, are made at the futuristic winery at Quinta do Napole. Charme is made with the Ports at Vale de Mendiz.
Niepoort Turris is made wine made from a very old single vineyard, with vines over 130 years old, without any pruning method, which faces south and is located in Cima Corgo, Douro. This 0.8 hectare vineyard is known as the “Torres” vineyatd and the grapes here used to go into Batuta, however Dirk felt that he could do something really special with the old vines here. The grapes are a typical Douro field blend. 75% of the grapes are d-estemmed prior to fermentation in stainless steel. The must remained in contact with the cap for 5 weeks, which allows for a very gentle maceration and keeps extraction under control. Turris is then aged in two 1000 litre German Fuder barrels from the Mosel, each over 60 years old for 20 months prior to a further 18 months in bottle prior to release. The wine was bottled early, without fining or filtration, to maintain its freshness, minerality, youthfulness and aromatic purity, and it is expected to age very well in the bottle.
The label is designed by artist João Noutel and the Turris comes in smart gift box with a hand signed limited edition artwork.
There were 3500 bottles Niepoort Turris produced in 2013.
