Norton Privada MalbecĀ is an Argentinian red wine from the Mendoza wine-growing region of Argentina. This wine is the big brother to the Norton Privada Family Blend,Ā both are available to buy at Fareham Wine Cellar.
The Norton Privada Range was originally reserved for the Swarovski familyās private cellar to enjoy among their friends. Thankfully, it is now available to everyone.
Bodega Norton is one of the longest-established wineries in Argentina. It was founded in 1895 by a British engineer named Edmund James Palmer Norton, who had come to work on the railway joining Chile and Mendoza, when he planted vines (imported from France) in LujƔn de Cuyo, Mendoza. He built what is the current winery in 1919. In 1973, Norton Malbec was first exported to the USA and became the first Malbec to be sold outside of Argentina.
The estate remained in the Norton family until 1988, when it was bought by Austrian businessman Gernot Langes-Swarovski (of crystal fame). During the 1990s, under the supervision of Gernot’s son, Michael Halstrick, the estate underwent a period of significant investments, modernisation and growth with expansion into export markets. Wine Spectator named Bodega Norton as one of the top 20 wineries in the world in 2006, and many awards have followed since. Norton Wines can now be found in over 72 countries worldwide.
The grapes for the Norton Privada Malbec are sourcedĀ from the wineryās oldest vineyards at the foothills of the Andes in LujĆ”n de Cuyo, Mendoza, Argentina. Only the finest Malbec grapes are selected from some of the estate’s oldest vineyards with an age of between 50 and 80 years old. The vineyards are situated betweenn 850 and 1100 metres above sea level.
Norton Privada Malbec has a deep violet-red colour.
On the nose, there are aromas of ripe black fruits (blackberries, blueberries, cassis), violets, black pepper, spices, tobacco, and subtle mocha or chocolate notes.
The palate is full-bodied and plush, with juicy dark plum, kirsch, and herbal liquorice flavours, supported by elegant, fine-grained tannins, creamy mid-palate texture and balanced acidity.
The finish is long and lingering, with savoury hints of graphite, cocoa and raspberry.
Pairs beautifully with grilled red meats, robust stews, mature cheeses or dark chocolate.
