Trapiche Terroir Series Malbec Finca Ambrosia is a single vineyard Malbec made from grapes sourced from a vineyard in Gualtallary Valley, Tupungato, Mendoza.
Trapiche’s Winery is located in the Mendoza wine-growing region in the foothills of the Andes. Trapiche was founded in 1883 next to a railway station, this location meant they had a much easier route to export than other Mendoza wineries, something that they attribute their continued success to today. Today Trapiche own over 1000 hectares of their own vineyards as well as buying some grapes from local growers. Trapiche have long recognised the importance of “terroir” and, under the careful supervision of Chief Winemaker and oenologist Daniel Pi, the best terroirs (vineyard sites) possible for each grape variety are very carefully chosen.
The Trapiche Terroir series is a range of wines that developed out of Trapiche’s desire to give recognition to some of the best Malbec producing vineyards and the growers that owned them. Originally this range was known as Trapiche Single Vineyard Malbec and each year Trapiche would choose three different growers’ Malbecs, from three of their different growers to represent the best Malbec that Trapiche can offer in a particular vintage. This first wines were released and it was a great honour to have one’s vineyard chosen for such accolades. Some of the vineyards chosen over the years have included Finca Suarez Lastrac, Finca Coletto, Vina Domingo F Sarmiento and Vina Jorge Miralles. From 2011 Trapiche now only bottle three different terroirs as the Trapiche Terroir Series – Finca Ambrosia, Finca Coletto and Finca Orellana. Each single vineyard is located in different areas in Mendoza and at different altitudes, this variation in terroir leads to three markedly different wines.
Trapiche Terroir Series Malbec Finca Ambrosia 2014 is 100% Malbec from a single vineyard located at 1307 metres above sea level in the Gualtallary Valley, Tupungato, Mendoza. The vines are grown on sandy soils with calcareous gravel to a plant density of 2500 per hectare & the vines follow a North-South orientation. All three of the Terroir Series wines are vinified in the same traditional manner. The grapes are hand harvested into small 20kg crates to ensure they are not damaged. The grapes then undergo destemming and berry selection at the winery. The grapes are fermented in small concrete tanks with wild yeasts for 25 days and the wine undergoes natural malolactic fermentation. After vinification the wine is aged for 18 months in new French oak barrels and a further 12 months in bottle prior to release.
Trapiche Terroir Series Malbec Finca Ambrosia is suitable for vegans and vegetarians.
