Pio Cesare Barolo DOCG presented in 1.5 Litre Magnums. Also available in standard 75cl bottles.
“2010 is a classic Piemontese vintage producing wines rich in tannin, not dissimilar to 2008, it is a vintage that will certainly impress Barolo lovers”, says Pio Boffa of Pio Cesare. In contrast to 2009, the wines are richer and more structured with more ageing potential.
Pio Cesare is a historic family-owned estate named after its founder, Cesare Pio, who established the business in 1881. It is based in Alba in the heart of the Piemonte region, nestled between the Alps and the Mediterranean Sea. The surrounding hills offer a handful of ideal exposures for grape growing, with unique microclimates. The confluence of cold Alpine air with warm maritime moisture regularly creates a misty glow, or “nebbia”, over these foothills, hence Nebbiolo, the great red variety of the region.
Pio Cesare was one of the first Italian wine producers to export Barolo to the UK in the 1950s, playing a significant role in popularising Barolo as a high-quality wine. Today, the company is run by Cesare’s great-grandson, Pio Boffa, who continues to combine tradition and innovation to highly acclaimed, high-quality Piedmontese wines. It was Pio Boffa who introduced the limited range of single vineyard wines that includes Barolo Ornato, Barbaresco Il Bricco, Barbera Fides and Piodilei Chardonnay. They have recently reintroduced a Barolo Chinato.
The grapes for ‘Classic’ Pio Cesare Barolo DOCG are grown in four vineyards belonging to the Pio Cesare family in four of the Barolo communes: Serralunga d’Alba (Ornato), La Morra (Roncaglie), Grinzane Cavour (Gustava) and Barolo-Novello (Ravera). A portion of the grapes comes from other exclusive vineyards owned by growers, who have been providing grapes to the Pio Cesare family for generations.
Grapes are hand-picked, gently pressed and fermented at 25° to 26°C. Vinification takes place in stainless steel tanks, with skin contact for 20-25 days. The wine is then aged in mid-toasted French oak for three years, with 70% in 20-50 hectolitre casks and 30% in barriques.
Magnums of Barolo are a great buy for serious wine buyers and are perfect for special occasions or as gifts. The larger format bottle provides optimum ageing conditions. The reduced surface-area-to-volume ratio ensures a slower, more controlled oxidation, allowing Barolo’s complex tannin structure to evolve gracefully over two to three decades if cellared well. Of course, the impressive presentation makes them ideal for milestone celebrations and provides a great centrepiece for birthdays, dinner parties, anniversaries etc.
