Description

Prios Maximus Roble is a red wine from the DO Ribera del Duero made by Bodegas de los Rios Prieto. The company was founded by Felix de los Rios Iglesias was founded in 2000 in the small town of Pesquera del Duero, which is famous for being the home of many fine Ribera del Duero wines including the iconic Pesquera.  It is situated close to the banks of the River Duero in the province of Valladolid in the autonomous Comunidad de Castilla y León. Bodegas de los Rios Prieto has around 32 hectares of vineyard (all of the vines are trellised) in three locations, 22 hectares in Pesquera del Duero (3 seperate vineyards), 2.2 hectares in Penafiel and 8 hectares in Manzanillo. The estate vineyards account for about half of the wine produced, they also buy fruit from carefully selected, high quality growers in the same locations.

The grapes for the Prios Maximus Roble are 100% Tempranillo, which is known in the local areas as Tinta del Pais, from vineyards with an average age of 40 years old. The grapes are carefully monitored for acidity, weight, sugars by winemaker Jorge González from early September so that they can be harvested at peak ripeness. The grapes are harvested by hand, usually in early October, into 20kg crates and taken to the winery where they undergo a rigorous manual selection. The bunches are destemmed and the grapes, with their skins, undergo a period of fermentation for 10 days in temperature controlled stainless steel. The wine undergoes malolactic fermentation and is finally aged for 6 months in American oak prior to bottling.
