Description

Santadi Rocca Rubia Carignano Del Sulcis Riserva is a premium Italian red wine from the sun-drenched island of Sardinia, Italy. It is produced from the ancient Carignano grape, and this impressive Riserva showcases everything that makes Carignano del Sulcis wines so distinctive: rich, robust character, firm yet refined tannins, and exceptional ageing potential. Warm Mediterranean sunshine and cooling sea breezes create the perfect conditions for this expressive, full-bodied red.

Santadi Rocca Rubia Carignano Del Sulcis Riserva Winemaking

  • Destemming and crushing of the grapes.
  • Fermentation and maceration for 12–14 days in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature of 25–28 °C.
  • Frequent pump-overs during fermentation to ensure the must fully absorbs the noble tannins typical of bush-grown Carignano.
  • Malolactic fermentation (completed after the initial fermentation).
  • Ageing in oak — transferred to small, fine-grained 1st- and 2nd-passage French oak casks for 10–12 months to develop complexity, texture, and aromatic depth.
  • Bottle ageing for several months to allow early bouquet development.

Unique Terroir: Pre-Phylloxera Vines on Ancient Sandy Soils

The arenaceous (sandy) terrain of Sulcis’ coastline is unique in that pre-phylloxera Carignano rootstock survives and thrives: the finely textured, wind-swept sand naturally prevents phylloxera from depositing its eggs. Carignano can only be produced from the “alberello” trained vine (“goblet” or bush vines), which in turn can only be grown on sandy soils such as those of the vineyards that supply Cantina di Santadi.

Santadi: A Legendary Sardinian Wine Producer

Cantine Santadi was established in 1960 as a cooperative of grape growers coordinated by the Land Reform Board of Sardinia. It is located in the southwest of Sardinia, in the heart of Sulcis. In the 1970s, a new board of directors, headed by Antonello Pilloni, who is still chairman, decided to move on from the production of low-quality bulk wine to the high-quality wines that Santadi produce today. To assist them, the board employed the internationally famous oenologist Giacomo Tachis, the man behind the great reds of Antinori in Tuscany, including Sassicaia, Tignanello and Solaia. Santadi is one of the jewels of Sardinia.

Not Just Carignano Del Sulcis

As well as specialising in Carignano Del Sulcis, Santadi also produce wines from some of the other major Sardinian wine-growing regions, including Monica di Sardegna, Cannonau di Sardegna, Vermentino di Sardegna and Nuragus di Cagliari. There are two levels of wines “Eccellenze” and “Classi”. The Rocca Rubia is a part of the Excellence range; the other wine we sell from Santadi, the Grotta Rossa, is in the Classic range. The company also produces a grappa.

Vegan & Vegetarian Friendly

FAQs

What is Carignano del Sulcis?

Carignano del Sulcis is a DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata) for red (and rosé) wine produced in the Sulcis region in the south-west corner of Sardinia, Italy. The DOC was established in 1977.

Is Carignano the same as Carignan?

Yes, Carignano is the Italian name, and Carignan is the French name. It is also known as Carinena and Mazuelo in Spain.

What makes Carignano del Sulcis Special?

What makes Carignano del Sulcis particularly special is its terroir: the fine, wind-swept sandy soils of the Sulcis coastline are one of the few places in the world where pre-phylloxera vines still survive, as the sand naturally prevents the destructive phylloxera louse from taking hold.
