Description

The Hedonist Tempranillo is a small batch red wine made by Walter Clappis Wines in the McLaren Vale wine-growing region. It is a biodynamic wine certified by NASAA.

Walter Clappis has been making wine for 25 years and is considered to be one of Australia’s most outstanding Winemakers – he is the only Winemaker to have ever won the coveted Dan Murphy Trophy three times. Walter Clappis has always made wine employing the most traditional methods: open vat fermentation and basket pressing with fermentation usually being completed in small oak barrels. This method is adopted to increase the overall complexity and integration of oak through the wine. Now he farms his vineyards biodynamically and does not use pesticides or herbicides. All the wines reflect a purity of fruit which is consistent with the Winemaker and his philosophies. More recently he has been joined by his winemaking daughter and son-in-law Kimberly and James Cooter.

The grapes for the Hedonist Tempranillo comes from Hedonist’s biodynamically run vineyard situated in the Willunga foothills, McLaren Vale. These vineyards are only 5kms to the west of St Vincent’s Gulf and the hot summer days are cooled by the evening sea breezes. The vineyard are primarily rich loam over clay with patches of underlying limestone which helps to give wines produced here a rich and fullness of palate.

The grapes for the Hedonist Tempranillo come from 10 year old vines. The wine is traditionally vinified in open top fermenters and pumped over twice daily. 3 separate parcels were fermented for between 6-12 days on skins. Malolactic fermentation was completed in seasoned 300L French oak hogs heads. Seasoned oak was selected for its minimal oak influence to keep the wine fresh and retain primary fruit characteristics.
