Description

Torbreck The Factor is an homage to the great old Shiraz vines of the Barossa Valley and the growers who painstakingly tend and nurture them each year. Torbreck The Factor displays the concentration and fruit purity that only the most meticulous farming can achieve.

Torbreck Vintners was founded in 1994 by David Powell and is located at Marananga on the western ridge of the Barossa Valley. It is named after a forest situated just south of Inverness in the Highlands of Scotland. The roots go back to 1992 when Powell, who was then working at Rockford, began to discover and clean up a few sections of dry-grown old vines, so that he could buy the fruit for his own wine. The first wine made under the Torbreck label was during the 1995 vintage, with the finished wines released in 1997. Torbreck was acquired by Pete Knight in 2008 and the senior winemaker is currently Ian Hongell. The wines are made in a style emulating those of the Rhone Valley and are made from various grapes including red grapes Shiraz, Grenache and Mataro as well as white grapes Viognier, Roussanne and Marsanne.

The 100% Shiraz for the Torbreck Factor comes from small parcels of fruit from old dry grown vines are selected for their individual qualities. The vineyards are located in Marananga, Greenock, Krondorf, Gomersal and Ebenezer. Many of these vineyards were planted in the 19th century and because of South Australia’s far-sighted quarantine policy, were not affected by the phylloxera outbreak that ravaged the vineyards of the world in the 1880s. They survive on their own roots more than a century later as clonal time capsules.

The various parcels are vinified and matured separately in old 70% and new 30% French Oak barriques for 24 months. Having spent two years in predominantly older oak, this wine manages to express true Barossa Shiraz character.

As with many of the other Torbreck wines (like Struie, Gask, Steading et al.), this wine is derived from Scotland. The name come from the Scottish term used for the manager on a Highland estate.
