Description

Torbreck Woodcutters Shiraz is the entry point wine into the fantastic range of Torbreck red wines. It is part of Torbreck’s core range of wines and is known for its approachability, fruit-forward character and great value for money.

Torbreck Vintners was founded in 1994 by David Powell, who had a vision of producing high-quality, handcrafted wines that showcased the unique terroir of the Barossa Valley, and is located at Marananga on the western ridge of the Barossa Valley. The roots go back to 1992 when Powell, who was then working at Rockford, began to discover and clean up a few sections of dry-grown old vines, so that he could buy the fruit for his own wine. The first wine made under the Torbreck label was during the 1995 vintage, with the finished wines released in 1997. Torbreck was acquired by Pete Knight in 2008 and the senior winemaker is currently Ian Hongell. Torbreck Vintners is particularly well-known for its red wines, which are mainly made from traditional Rhône grape varieties, such as Shiraz (Syrah), Grenache, and Mataro (Mourvèdre).

The grapes for Torbreck Woodcutters Shiraz are all sourced from the hand harvested and hand tended plots throughout the Northwestern Barossa Valley located in the Marananga, Greenock, Seppeltsfield, Gomersal, Moppa, Lyndoch and Ebenezer sub-regions. This wine reflects the up and coming Shiraz vineyards of the Barossa, rather than the battle hardened old vines that make up the core of Torbreck’s other wines. Like all Torbreck wines, Woodcutters Shiraz receives the very best viticultural and winemaking treatment. 

The grapes are hand-harvested and the wine is fermented in open-top fermenters (cement, wood and stainless steel) for 6 to 7 days, gently basket-pressed and matured in large, old large format French oak barrels and foudres for 12 months. 100% Shiraz. Bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Torbreck Woodcutters Shiraz is so-named after the several years that Torbreck founder Dave Powell spent as a lumberjack (or woodcutter) in the Torbreck Forest situated just south of Inverness in the Highlands of Scotland. Some of the other wines have suitably Scottish names like The Steading and Struie.
