Trapiche: Argentinian Wine Pioneers

Trapiche’s Winery is located in the Mendoza wine-growing region in the foothills of the Andes. Trapiche was founded in 1883 next to a railway station (or Estancia); this location meant they had a much easier route to export than other Mendoza wineries, something that they attribute to their continued success.

Today, Trapiche own over 1000 hectares of its own vineyards as well as buying some grapes from local growers. Trapiche have long recognised the importance of “terroir” and, under the careful supervision of head of winemaking Sergio Eduardo Casé, the best terroirs (vineyard sites) possible for each grape variety are very carefully chosen.

Trapiche Terroir Series Wines

The Trapiche Terroir series is a range of wines that developed out of Trapiche’s desire to give recognition to some of the best Malbec-producing vineyards and the growers that owned them. Originally this range was known as Trapiche Single Vineyard Malbec, and each year, Trapiche would choose three different growers’ Malbecs, from three different growers to represent the best Malbec that Trapiche can offer in a particular vintage. These have recently joined by a Terroir Series Cabernet Sauvignon from Finca Laborde.

The first Single Vineyard wines were released in 2003, and it became a very prestigious thing to have one’s vineyard chosen for such accolades. Some of the vineyards chosen over the years have included Finca Suarez Lastrac, Finca Coletto, Vina Domingo F Sarmiento and Vina Jorge Miralles. From 2011, Trapiche only bottle three different terroirs as the Trapiche Terroir Series – Finca Ambrosia, Finca Coletto and Finca Orellana. Each single vineyard is located in different areas in Mendoza and at different altitudes; this variation in terroir leads to three markedly different wines. All three wines are available to buy at Fareham Wine Cellar.

Trapiche Terroir Series Finca Orellana Malbec Vineyard

Trapiche Terroir Series Finca Orellana Malbec has been one of the most consistent vineyard sites and has been chosen as one of three vineyards to be bottled in this range a number of times. As mentioned above the vineyard is located in La Consulta in Valle de Uco, Mendoza. The vines are 62 years old and the vineyards are situated at 990 metres above sea level. 2011 was the fourth time that Fausto Orellana has been chosen to be part of the Terroir Series. He puts this success down to the fact that his Malbec vines for this wine are over well over 60 years old. The vines are grown on alluvial, sandy soils with a plant density of 5000 per hectare & the vines follow a North-South orientation.

Winemaking

Each of the three Trapiche Terroir Series Malbec wines is vinified in the same way.

  • Grapes are hand-harvested with bunch selection in the vineyards.
  • Grapes undergo destemming and berry selection.
  • Wine undergoes fermentation and maceration in small concrete vats for a minimum of 25 days.
  • Wine undergoes natural malolactic fermentation.
  • Wine is aged for 18 months in new French oak barrels.
  • Wine is further aged for 12 months in bottle before release.
  • Suitable for vegans and vegetarians.

Tasting Notes

Trapiche Terroir Series Malbec Finca Orellana is a malbec of deep red-garnet colour displaying aromas of red fruit such as morello cherries, and intense balsamic notes reminiscent of mint and fresh herbs. Sweet and ample as it enters the mouth, with great fruit concentration and ripe, soft tannins. Long, lingering, and elegant finish.

Food Pairing

This wine pairs well with roasted lamb, venison, barbecued meats, charcuterie and strong, mature cheeses.
