Valdelacierva Garnacha Rioja is produced by Bodegas Valdelacierva which is part of Hispano Bodegas. It is quite a rarity, there are not many Rioja wines made from 100% Garnacha. It is a single vineyard wine.
Hispano Bodegas is a group of three like-minded wineries who united to form a small group selling wines from three of Spain’s most famous wine regions: Rioja, Ribera del Duero and Rueda. It is 100% Spanish owned. The group consists of Bodegas Valdelacierva in Rioja, Vina Gormaz in Ribera del Duero and Bodegas Grande Winery in Rueda. The group has three main tenets: absolute respect for the vineyard and the terroir to produce the very best grapes to begin with, use of modern technology with respect to the traditions of the past and careful barrel selection in the winery. Their aim is to produce high-quality, terroir driven wines. Bodegas Valdelacierva is located in the heart of Rioja Alta (Navarrete) and has 125 hectares of vineyards divided into small plots with vines that range between 25-130 years old. Bodegas Valdelacierva has long term agreements with wine growers in the Rioja region. Valdelacierva has complete control of the vineyard management, processes and selection which ensures maximum quality year after year. The wines come from selected vineyards in the localities of San Vicente de la Sonsierra, Briones, Baños de Ebro and Yécora. Harvesting is carried out manually following an on-site selection of the grapes. Great care is taken with their transport to the winery, which is done separately based on the plots and the age of each particular vineyard.
The Grenache / Garnacha grapes for the Valdelacierva Garnacha Rioja are sourced from plots of vinesin La Pedriza in Tudelilla. The vineyard is situated at an altitude of 545 metres above sea level. The vines have an age of over 75 years old and the soils are gravel and pebbles. After hand harvest the grapes are de-stemmed and transferred to 700 litre tanks for fermentation. Fermentation is temperature controlled with a manually punching down of the cap three times a day. Post fermentation the grapes are macerated for 5 days with a plunging down of the cap once a day. Finally the wine is transferred to new, 500L French oak barrels where it undergoes malolactic fermentation and a maturation period of at least 7 months.
Valdelacierva Garnacha Rioja is suitable for vegetarians and vegans.
Valdelacierva Garnacha Rioja has a bright cherry red colour with violet hues. The nose is very intense and is dominated by red and black fruits with hints of Balsamic and and cocoa in the background. The palate has more red fruit with hints of spice and a little oak. A very well balance wine with good tannin structure and nice length.
Try with lamb dishes, lamb chops, roast and grilled meats.
