Vega Sicilia Pintia 2021 is a modern and stylish Toro made from 100% Tinta de Toro grown on ancient vines with an average age of 35 years old. Pintia is a wine of both power and refinement, reflecting the extreme continental climate and distinctive pebble-rich soils of its vineyards on the banks of the Douro River. This is Toro at its most sophisticated, structured and age-worthy, yet with an elegance and freshness that sets it apart from the region’s more rustic offerings.
2021 proved to be an outstanding year for Pintia, blessed with well-distributed rainfall across all seasons and a notable absence of extreme weather. A gentle winter gave way to a warm spring with ideal conditions during flowering, while moderate summer temperatures and healthy water reserves ensured the vines remained fresh and balanced throughout the growing season. Harvest took place between 11th September and 4th October.
As well as large vineyard holdings in Ribera del Duero, Vega Sicilia also owns 96 hectares of vineyards in the Toro DO, where Pintia is made. Pintia lies on the banks of the Douro River, within the Toro D.O. region. The extremely cold winters and hot summers influence its complex soils, which are mainly known for their significant pebble content. This means that finding the perfect harvest period is key to ensuring the wine conserves both its fresh aromas and acidity. The grape variety planted here is Tinta de Toro, with an average age of 35 years.
Vega Sicilia can trace its origins back to 1864, when it was established by Don Eloy Lecanda y Chaves, who planted various grape varieties from the Bordeaux wine region of France, including Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The estate has been owned since 1982 by the Álvarez family.
1982 was the year that Ribera del Duero was granted Denominación de Origen (DO) status, and it is the Alvarez family who have turned Vega Sicilia into one of the world’s iconic wines. The estate comprises 1000 hectares with some 210 under vine. There are 19 soil types divided into 55 plots with very specific characteristics. The influence of the River Duero’s flow and the passage of time have been vital in developing these soils.
Vega Sicilia Pintia 2021 displays a deep, intense purple-ruby colour with a bright rim.
On the nose, it offers pure and expressive black fruit aromas, including blackberry, blackcurrant, plum and raspberry, layered with wild mint, menthol, dried flowers, cedarwood, coffee beans and subtle violet notes.
The palate is full-bodied and opulent yet remarkably fresh and balanced for Toro, with abundant ripe black fruit, silky texture, fine-grained polished tannins and excellent length. It combines classic Toro power and density with elegance and vibrancy, making 2021 one of the finest recent vintages – already enjoyable but with strong ageing potential.
Perfect with grilled or roasted red meats, especially ribeye steak, lamb chops, venison or mature hard cheeses. It also pairs beautifully with rich game dishes.
