Description

Domaines Ott Clos Mireille Rosé is arguably one of the very best Rosé wines from Provence and is certainly one of the top Rosé wines in the world. Whilst it may not have the PR machines of Whispering Angel or Chateau Minuty behind it, this is an excellent, understated Provençal Rosé, with a long history. Available to buy now at Fareham Wine Cellar.

Domaines Ott Established 1912

Domaines Ott was established in 1912 by Marcel Ott, an Alsacien who dreamed of creating a great wine estate by the Mediterranean. The estate continued to be family-owned until it was bought out by Champagne Louis Roederer in 2004. Today, the estate is represented by Christian and Francois Ott.

Domaines Ott consists of three different estates in the Bandol and Cotes de Provence AOCs and produces some of the most prestigious wines in the world. The three estates are

  • Chateau Romassan in Bandol
  • Chateau de Selle in Cotes de Provence
  • Clos Mireille, also in Cotes de Provence

The estate produces a combination of red and white wines, but it is their Rosé wines that the estate is arguably most famous for.

Domaines Ott Clos Mireille

Clos Mireille is a 174-hectare estate located in the Cotes de Provence AOC, of which 56 hectares are under vine. It was acquired by the Ott family in 1935 and was completely remodelled and replanted in the late 1930s. The estate is located very close to the Mediterranean coast and was built by Benedictine monks in the 18th century. It is unusual for vines to be planted so close to the sea, but this is responsible for the inimitable character of its wines

Clos Mireille is an ancient terrain well known for its mix of silica, clay and schist soils and the estate’s broad seafront location. It is planted with Grenache, Cinsault, Syrah, Semillon and Rolle (also known as Vermentino).

The microclimate and the sea spray provide highly favourable conditions for white wines, and the parcels used in the “blanc” slope down as far as the sea. The vines are levelled into espaliers to enable even tilling and planting, and are pruned and trained using the double cordon method.

Domaines Ott Clos Mireille Rosé Winemaking

  • Produced using the saignée method.
  • Grapes are hand-picked.
  • Undergoes careful bunch sorting.
  • Subjected to very gentle pressing.

According to the cellar master Nicolas Maurs at Clos Mireille, this is “a particularly luscious rosé wine, a testament to a young vineyard with a passionate heart”.
