Description

d’Arenberg The Peppermint Paddock Sparkling Red Blend is a wonderfully distinctive sparkling red, named after the vineyard from which it takes its grapes – a parcel surrounded by peppermint gum trees in McLaren Vale. Originally planted with Shiraz, which never quite found its feet here, the site was replanted with Chambourcin in 1989, and the results speak for themselves: a vibrant, psychedelic-purple wine bursting with redcurrant, mulberry and a signature minty lift. d’Arenberg The Peppermint Paddock Sparkling Red Blend Winemaking

  • A blend of 88% Chambourcin and 12% Graciano
  • Chambourcin is a French-American interspecific hybrid grape variety, available since 1963, known for producing deep-coloured, aromatic wines
  • Chambourcin is a teinturier grape — meaning its juice is pink or red, rather than clear like most red vitis vinifera varieties
  • Chambourcin has also been used in d’Arenberg’s Vintage Fortified Shiraz
  • Graciano is a grape traditionally associated with Rioja, Spain, known for its dark colour
  • A non-vintage wine, blended from parcels of different vintages to ensure consistency year to year
  • The base wine is made using traditional techniques: open fermentation, foot treading, and basket pressing
  • Secondary fermentation is triggered by the addition of liqueur de tirage, creating natural bubbles and the wine’s signature vibrant purple colour
  • Suitable for vegans and vegetarians
  • Sealed with a crown cap

Blended as a Non-Vintage

d’Arenberg The Peppermint Paddock is a non-vintage wine with parcels of wine from different vintages being blended to produce a consistent wine from year to year. The base wine is prepared using the time-honoured techniques of open fermenting, foot treading and basket pressing. The addition of liqueur tirage instigates secondary fermentation and creates bubbles with a unique, vibrant purple colour.

D’Arenberg Wines, A McLaren Vale Icon

d’Arenberg is one of the most iconic wineries in Australia, and certainly one of the most celebrated names in the McLaren Vale wine region. The company was founded by Cornish-born Joseph Osborn, whose parents had emigrated to Australia in the 1850s. Joseph went on to become a well-known Australian Rules footballer, co-founding the Norwood Football Club, before becoming a partner in Thomas Hardy Limited, a local politician, and a figure in horse racing. He eventually purchased what would become the d’Arenberg estate in 1912.

Today, the estate is run by the fourth generation of the family, winemaker Chester Osborn. d’Arenberg is instantly recognisable for its bold red-striped label and quirky wine names, including Dead Arm Shiraz, Laughing Magpie and Stump Jump.

d’Arenberg’s McLaren Vale Vineyards and Winemaking

The estate is planted with classic Australian varieties such as Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache, alongside more unusual Mediterranean and Rhône plantings including Tempranillo, Sangiovese, Vermentino, Marsanne, Roussanne and Viognier.

Located around 45 minutes south of Adelaide, McLaren Vale offers ideal growing conditions thanks to its Mediterranean climate, diverse soil types and cooling sea breezes from its coastal proximity. Minimal intervention is central to d’Arenberg’s philosophy, allowing each vineyard site’s individual character to shine through. Classic vinification techniques – including open-top vat fermentation, foot treading and basket pressing – are used throughout the winemaking process.

Organic, Biodynamic and Family Wine Credentials

All d’Arenberg-owned and leased vineyards are NASAA certified for organic and biodynamic farming, reflecting the estate’s long-standing commitment to sustainable viticulture. d’Arenberg is also a proud member of Australia’s First Families of Wine, a group representing some of the country’s most respected multi-generational wine producers.

Tasting Notes

Peppermint Paddock pours a striking, deep purple colour in the glass. This is a wine that’s as playful as its name suggests.

The nose offers a distinctive mix of redcurrant and sugar-coated peanuts, layered with cooling mint and menthol notes that give it real retro character.

On the palate, generous mulberry and boysenberry fruit bring a fat, juicy core, while a natural spritz adds lift and vibrancy throughout. Sweet and sour notes play off one another beautifully, making this a fun, lively wine perfect for celebrations and get-togethers.

Food Pairing

This sparkling red wine is a perfect partner for:

  • Charcuterie boards — cured meats and salami love the wine’s sweet-sour fruit and effervescence
  • BBQ — think pulled pork, glazed ribs or burgers; the spritz cuts through richness beautifully
  • Spicy dishes — Asian-style dishes (think Thai or Sichuan) work really well, as the sweetness and fizz tame chilli heat
  • Dark chocolate or berry desserts — the mulberry/boysenberry character mirrors dessert fruit nicely
  • Cheese — particularly soft, washed-rind or blue cheeses, which stand up to its boldness
