Description

Champagne Gosset Extra Brut is the newest addition to Gosset’s portfolio of Champagnes. Unlike the rest of their cuvées, the Extra Brut does undergo malolactic fermentation. Best served as an aperitif and available to buy at Fareham Wine Cellar.

Champagne Gosset, Established 1584

Champagne Gosset is the oldest Champagne House. It was founded in Ay in 1584 and remained in the Gosset family until 1993. The Renaud-Cointreau family, owners of Cognac Frapin, bought Gosset in 1993 and have worked tirelessly to ensure Champagne Gosset remains a family affair. In 2013 they will celebrate 20 years of ownership in which production has risen from 400,000 bottles per year to approximately 1 million bottles.

Premier and Grand Cru Vineyards

Gosset is located in the Marne Valley and, although founded in Ay, they have also had premises in Epernay since 2009. The Montagne de Reims and Marne Valley surround Epernay and Aÿ and are known for their chalky soils and hillside vineyards that provide excellent growing conditions for the vines. Champagne Gosset mainly works with growers surrounding Epernay and focuses on Premier and Grand Cru vineyards.

The Echelles des Crus

In the Champagne region, the vineyards are officially classified by a scale known as Echelle des Crus where each vineyard is ranked between 80 and 100 percent. Champagne Gosset’s sourcing policy means that they have a high average across their range of 95%. (Premier Cru vineyards are rated from 90 to 99 and Grand Cru are 100 percent)

Champagne Gosset Extra Brut Winemaking

  • The cuveé for the Champagne Gosset Extra Brut is Chardonnay 32%, Pinot Noir 45% and Pinot Meunier 23%.
  • The fruit is sourced from Cumières, Boursault, Janvry, Chavot, Vertus, Cuis, Avenay,Tauxières, Louvois, Villers-Marmery, Trépail and other villages.
  • The wine is vinified and aged on lees to eliminate the risk of premature oxidation.
  • It is bottled as an Extra-Brut with a dosage of 5 g/L to preserve the balance between freshness, fruit and vinosity, without masking the wine’s character or purity.
  • The wine is aged for a minimum of 3 years in the cellar at a constant temperature, well beyond the legal minimum of 15 months.
  • As mentioned above, this is the only wine in the Gosset Champagne portfolio that undergoes malolactic fermentation.

Cellar master Odilon de Varine comments: “This cuvée offers a subtle blend of aromatic precision and vinosity. It shows a complex and round character while being Extra-Brut It has been designed for drinkers who love lively champagnes.”

Tasting Notes

From Gosset:

Appearance: Bright, pale gold hue. Fine, persistent mousse.

Nose: Clean and clear on the nose with white fl ower aromas, such as acacia and hawthorn,
set off by succulent aromas of pear.

Palate: This wine is of great purity with a fresh and lively acidity. It is pure and forthright on
entry to the palate. The aromas detected on the nose come through again on the palate,
along with vineyard peaches, mirabelles and greengages. This succulent wine is
starting to express some mature aromas, thanks to the 3 years spent on its lees.

Food Pairing

Gosset’s Extra Brut is a perfect aperitif wine to serve as a partner with sweet and sour dishes such as roast pork and apple sauce, or chicken with cashew nuts.
