Champagne Krug stands as a testament to the pursuit of perfection in winemaking. As the flagship offering from the prestigious Krug Champagne House, Krug Grande Cuvée Brut embodies the culmination of the family’s unwavering commitment to crafting the finest and most exceptional champagne.
Krug Champagne was established by Joseph Krug in 1843 and, with unique single-mindedness and sense of purpose, the Krug family has proudly cultivated the markedly individual character of their exceptional champagne. Theirs is a living legend, a certain idea of excellence that has been quietly redefined through six generations without a break. Since January 1999 the house has been majority owned by the multinational conglomerate LVMH Moët Hennessy / Louis Vuitton SA, owners of, amongst other luxurious brands, Moet et Chandon, Veuve Clicquot and Ruinart). However the Krug family still remains involved and, in 2009, Olivier Krug became the house director.
The flagship of the house, Grande Cuvée is the supreme demonstration of the Krug art of blending. No recipe can define its intricate harmony, so every year the Krug family works from taste and memory alone to recreate this most complex of champagnes. Typically, Krug Grande Cuvée is blended from as many as 50 wines from three grape varieties, 20 to 25 growths, and six to ten different years. The “birth” of Krug Grande Cuvée, through its first fermentation exclusively in small oak casks, ensures the unique personality and dimension that is the Krug Style. There is no formula or recipe for Krug Grande Cuvée. Each year the Krug family meets to re-create the Champagne Krug Grande Cuvee. This is done with careful attention to the most minute detail so that after six years of aging, it will be in perfect continuity with previous Krugs.
The current bottling is the 171st edition which is a blend of 131 wines from 12 different years, the youngest of which is from 2015, while the oldest dates back to 2000. Its final composition is 45% Pinot Noir, 37% Chardonnay and 18% Pinot Meunier. A stay of around seven years in Krug’s cellars gives Krug Grande Cuvée 171st edition its distinct expression and elegance.
Appearance: A light golden colour and fine, vivacious
bubbles, holding a promise of pleasure.
Nose: Aromas of flowers in bloom, ripe, dried and
citrus fruits, as well as marzipan and gingerbread.
Palate:: Grilled notes and flavours of almond paste,
quince, lemon, limoncello and dried fruit.
This is a great food wine. Try with simple combinations like aged Parmesan or simply cooked Turbot.
As an aperitif pair with some Jabugo ham, mature Comté or pair it with oysters.
It also works well with lightly spiced dishes including Indian and Moroccan cuisine.
Try with desserts including carrot cake, tarte tatin or cheesecake.
