Churchview Estate St Johns Limited Release Vintage Brut 2017 is an Australian sparkling white wine made with 100% Chenin Blanc grapes from the Margaret River wine-growing region of Western Australia. It is made using the Méthode Traditionnelle with a secondary fermentation in the bottle.
Churchview Estate is an award-winning, family-owned wine producer located in the Margaret River wine-growing region of Western Australia. The estate was founded in 1999 by father and son team Spike and Raymond Fokkema and is situated near the locality of Metricup just off the Bussell Highway. Spike had emigrated from The Netherlands in the 1950s and had been a successful businessman prior to purchase. Today the estate is owned and run by Raymond Fokkema and his sister Sharon Bosveld (who joined the family business over 20 years ago). The winemaker is David Longden. Churchview Estate was awarded with a 5 star winery rating in James Halliday’s 2016 and 2020 classifications.
The estate takes it name from the view of the heritage listed Anglican Church of Saint John the Baptist which can be seen from the estate. The single vineyard estate comprises some 100 hectares with 56 hectares of vines. The site was carefully selected for its maritime climate, ideal and fertile gravelly loam soils, ample clean water and north facing slopes and 16 different grapes varieties are grown. Organic certification was awarded in 2020. The St Johns range is made from more unusual grape varieties such as Riesling, Marsanne and Petit Verdot.
After harvest, the Chenin Blanc grapes for the Churchview Estate St Johns Limited Release Vintage Brut are crushed and transferred, half into barrel and half into stainless steel tanks for fermentation. The lees are left in the wine to add important texture. Afterwards, the wine is bottled for its secondary fermentation and after 48 months the wine is riddled and disgorged, and is released for sale. A dry sparkling wine with a residual sugar of 6 g/L.
Suitable for vegetarians and vegans and Australian certified organic.
Colour: Brilliant Straw colour
Aroma: A very complex nose with green apple, spiced pear and short crust pastry. The barrel ferment adds a brioche layer and smokey character.
Palate: 100% Chenin Blanc. A full flavoured wine with an intense mid palate and a long clean finish. More fruit-driven then the nose suggests with apples and pears followed by spice and a yeasty line adding length.
Perfect as an aperitif and great with white meat, poultry, roast chicken, barbecued fish and chicken.
Try with soft, creamy cheese like a Brie, Camembert or Chaource.
