Description

Nederburg Premiere Cuvee Brut is a superbly, refreshing South African Sparkling wine made from a blend of 90% Chenin Blanc and 10% Sauvignon Blanc grapes sourced from vineyards across the Western Cape.

Nederburg has a long wine-making history stretching back over 200 years to 1791 when Phillipus Bernadus Wolvaart was granted ownership of 49 hectares of land, in what is now Paarl, by the Dutch East India Company. He called his new property Nederburgh and immediately set about clearing land and planting vines. By 1808 he had planted over 63,000 vines laying the foundations for what was to become the wine company we know today. Nederburg has changed hands many times through the years but was owned by the large South African wine and spirit company, Distell, for many years. Most recently, in 2023, Distell was taken over by Heineken and integrated into Heineken Beverages, a company created by the merger of Distell and Namibia Breweries. Since 2021 the team at Nederburg has been led by cellar master, and seasoned winemaker, Samuel Viljoen. he is ably assisted by winemakers Zinaschke Steyn, Imellia Prins and Jamie Williams. Nederburg remains one of South Africa’s most awarded wineries and their wines display a hallmark combination of fruit and finesse.

The Chenin Blanc and Sauvignon Blanc grapes for the Nederburg Premiere Cuvee Brut come from vineyards planted between 1989 and 1994. The vines are grown in irrigated, sandy riverbeds and decomposed granite and situated some 60m to 120m above sea level. The grapes were harvested by hand at 19º to 20º Balling during the end of January and beginning of February. The fruit was crushed and then cool-fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks at 13ºC for a period of two to three weeks. No skin contact was allowed and only the free-run juice was used. The wine was left on the lees for almost two months prior to final blending.

Tasting Notes

Appearance: Strikingly clear with a vivid sparkle.

Nose: Subtle pear and floral fragrances.

Palate: Pear flavours with preserved quince and other stone fruit like nectarine and apricot. A notably acidic, citrus tang keeps it fresh, light and festive. Succulent and suitably fizzy.

Food Pairing

Nederburg Premiere Cuvee Brut is the perfect partner to any celebration, it gives a bracing vitality to fresh oysters, seasonal fruits, omelettes, Eggs Benedict and is also excellent served on its own.
