Mas Macia Cava Brut Nature Reserva is dry style of Cava produced in the Penedes wine-growing region. It is the producer’s dryest style of wine. As a “Brut Nature” is has zero dosage, so no sugar is added during vinification.
Mas Macià Cava is made at Jordi Casanovas Bohigas’ beautiful Can Macia estate where they have been bottling Cava since 1936. The estate is located in Odena 50km north west of Barcelona and just 10km from the foothills of Montserrat and has been in the same family for 800 years. There are 35 hectares of vineyards in Odena and a further 54 hectares of vineyards at their Can Batllevell estate in Gelida (half-way between Odena and Barcelona).
Until recently the family sold most of their production as grapes or wine to other Catalan producers but now make their own Cava Following extensive investment in the cellars in 2000, the main emphasis has been on high quality estate-bottled wines. The mainstay of production remains Cava, with still wines becoming an increasingly important part of the range.
Mas Macia Cava Brut Nature Reserva is a classic blend of 40% Xarel-lo, 35% Macabeo and 15% Parellada grapes all sourced from the Can Macia estate in the Anoia river basin near Odena. The soils here are clayey calcareous soil with high temperature variations between day and night and very low rainfall. This helps to produce a low yield of grapes with high acidity that are slowly, yet fully, ripened which are ideal for making high quality Cava base wines. Produced using the traditional Cava method, with secondary fermentation in bottle. The wine sees extended maturation (22 months) before disgorgement to enhance the complex, fruity aromas. No dosage is added for this ‘Nature’ style. Winemaker is Maria Casanovas.
The vineyards are now classified as organic and organic certification for their Cava wines will follow in due course. Mas Macia Cava Brut Nature is suitable for vegetarians and vegans.
