Cave de Turckheim Pinot Gris Grand Cru Brand is made from grapes sourced from the Alsace Grand Cru of Brand. The vineyards of Grand Cru Brand are situated on a granite hill overlooking the medieval city of Turckheim itself and enjoy an excellent exposition and sunshine. It is bottled as an AOP Alsace Grand Cru.
Cave de Turckheim is situated in the pretty village of Turckheim, just slightly northwest of Colmar. It is firmly established as one of the best co-operatives in the world. Benefitting from the region’s uniquely dry terroir, Cave de Turckheim has successfully implemented viticulture raisonnée; the member growers reduced the use of pesticides, soil treatments, water and energy consumption which ensures the sustainable production of high quality grapes with minimal environmental impact. There is now a state-of-the-art winery and Jean Michel Lihrmann, who has been the senior winemaker for over 25 years, strongly believes that varietals in Alsace should express their delicate characteristics and favours the dryer style of Alsace wines. Testimony to their quality and attention to detail has been the clutch of medals and awards gained over the past few years, culminating in a clutch of awards, especially for the Grand Cru Brand range.
Cave de Turckheim Pinot Gris Grand Cru Brand is produced traditionally. Winemaker Michel Lihrmann takes great care: hand harvesting, pneumatic pressing, temperature-controlled fermentation, no finings and minimal filtration all help to preserve the naturally aromatic, fruity character of his wines.
This is an aromatic Alsatian wine and is a superb food wine.
The Grand Cru Brand takes its name from the German for “fire” because, due to its southerly aspect, this vineyard benefits from remarkably high levels of sunshine which in turn results in grapes with high levels of ripeness and richness. Legend has it that it was the site of a battled between the sun and a dragon. Their combat set fire to the forested hillside and the next spring a vineyard appeared.
