Chassagne Montrachet Les Embrazees is a 1er cru white Burgundy produced by Domaine Vincent et Sophie Morey. The domaine consists of 20 hectares of vines located in the heart of the “Côte des Blancs” in the villages of Cheilly-les-Maranges, Santenay, Chassagne-Montrachet, Saint-Aubin, and Puligny-Montrachet. It was founded in 2006 when Vincent took over part of his father’s vineyards on his retirement. The first vintage was 2007. In the same year Sophie was vinifying her first vintage for the Ménager-Belland domaine in Santenay and met whilst working in neighbouring vineyards. Eventually they were married. Their Chassagne Montrachet Les Embrazees 1er Cru is their flagship white Burgundy. Both families had holdings in this vineyard which were brought together by the marriage. The wines are made by Vincent in his father’s cellar, and more closely resemble Bernard’s style than those of his brother Thomas Morey. They are plumper than Thomas’s, more fruit-forward, although also more mineral, with no shortage of vineyard expression.
Les Embrazees vineyard is situated on clay and limestone with shallow red, stony soils. It is has a south-eastern exposure and is located at an altitude of 230m on the site of an old Gallo-Roman villa named Ambassacius. The vineyard covers 3 hectares. After vinification the wine is aged for oak barrels, 40% of which are new, for around 10 months. Chassagne Montrachet quite often offers great value compared to the more desirable vineyards of its neighbours in Meursault and Puligny-Montrachet.
