Chateau des Cros Les Coteaux de Lou is a sweet white wine bottled as a Loupiac appellation d’origine protegee (AOP). This is a sweet table wine, rather than a dessert wine, something akin to a Spatlese in sweetness. The Loupiac appellation is located on the eastern bank of the Garonne river, directly opposite the famous sweet white wines region of Sauternes.
Famille Boyer own a small collection of three petites chateaux – Chateau du Cros in Loupiac, Chateau Haut Mayne in Cérons and Chateau Clos Bourbon in Paillet. Chateau du Cros is the main property of the Famille Boyer and has been in the Boyer family for four generation. It is located in the small Bordeaux appellation of Loupiac. The vineyard is managed by Catherine Boyer whilst Henri Boyer is the consulting oenologist.
The vineyard for Chateau des Cros Les Coteaux de Lou overlooks the Garonne valley, on the steepest and sunniest clay-limestone slopes of the Boyer estate. The vineyard covers some 1.5 hectares and the vines have an average age of 35 years old. The grapes are manually harvested with 2 successive sortings. After a slow and progressive pressing, the juices are fermented in stainless steel vats at low temperature. The wine is aged on lees in stainless steel vats for 3 months.
The wine is a blend of and 70% Semillon, 15% Sauvignon Blanca and 15% Sauvignon Gris.
Chateau des Cros Les Coteaux de Lou has a good clear pale, golden yellow colour. The nose has an abundance of white fruit, floral notes and citrus. The Sauvignon Blanc brings some great freshness to the wine. On the palate there are more fruit flavours with grapefruit and pear flavours dominating. The finish is clean, fresh and has good sweetness with lively acidity.
Something to serve if you are looking for a lighter, fruitier wine than some of the stickier and sweeter dessert wines. Try with fruit desserts, fruit salads or even with duck breast, chicken and lighter white meat dishes if you prefer a sweeter wine. Also works well with cheeses.
