Chateau Jeanguillon Les Vignes de la Garene is a white wine from Bordeaux, which produces some of the most underated wines from Bordeaux. This wine can be labelled as both a Bordeaux Blanc AC and an Entre-Deux-Mers.
The wine is made at Chateau Vrai Caillou located in the district of Soussac, which is itself located in the Entre-Deux-Mers area between the Garonne river and the Dordogne River. The Chateau has been in the Pommier family since 1863 and, as was common at this time, was set up for mixed farming. It was mentioned in the Féret guide in 1879 and the family decided to concentrate purely on viticulture in 1920.
Since 2012 the estate has been owned and run by Christel de Meillac, daughter of Madame Pommier, and her husband Philippe de Meillac. They have implemented a regime of renovation over the last couple of years improving the vineyards and infrastructure. Today Chateau Jeanguillon has 90 hectares of vineyards, 65 hectares of red grape vines (Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc) and 25 hectares of white grape vines (Sauvignon, Semillon). The estate practices integrated agriculture with no pesticides or fertilizers and yields are kept to a minimum.
The grapes for the Chateau Jeanguillon Les Vignes de la Garene are mechanically harvested and are sorted twice, once in the vineyard and once at the winery. The grapes undergo a period of cold maceration and fermentation is in steel vats. The wine is rested for 2 months after fermentation and then bottled early to preserve freshness.
The wine is a blend of 40% Sauvignon Blanc, 30% Sauvignon Gris, 20% Semillon and 10% Muscadelle.
This wine used to be known as Chateau Vrai Caillou. When Madame Pommier was told by the Bordeaux Trade Organisation that there was already a wine named Caillou in Sauternes and that they could not use the name Chateau Caillou, her apparent response was “Really, there is another Caillou? So, mine will be the true (Vrai) one!” Hence the name.
