Description

Domaines Schlumberger Pinot Blanc Les Princes Abbes is a white wine from the Alsace wine-growing region of France. A lighter, fresher style of white wine, a perfect introduction into the world of Alsace wines, less aromatic than the famous Rieslings and perfumed Gewurztraminer wines of the region.

Domaines Schlumberger was founded in 1810, when Nicolas Schlumberger established his vineyards on the renowned, sunny slopes above the town of Guebwiller. With a holding of more than 140 hectares of vineyards, Domaines Schlumberger are not only the largest owners of vineyards in Alsace, but also have the largest Grand Cru holding of 70 hectares. Schlumberger’s vineyards cover nine kilometres along the south facing slopes of the Vosges Mountains, maximising the sunshine, and include four Grand Cru sites which represent more than 50% of the domaine. Yields are kept deliberately low, often a necessity on the steeper slopes of light sandy soil which can be as much as 60º. The vines are horizontally planted in rows protected by 50 kilometres of dry-stone walls to prevent soil erosion. The vineyards have excellent south to south east exposure and a cooling breeze allows the organically farmed grapes to reach optimum maturity.

Les Prince Abbes range of wines is  the entry point range of wines and is Named after the Prince Abbots who owned the vineyard from the 9th to the 18th century. The focus here is on the expression of classic varietal characteristics at an affordable price. Domaines Schlumberger Pinot Blanc Les Princes Abbes is blend of 70% Pinot Blanc and 30% Auxerrois. The grapes come from Schlumberger’s Grands Crus vineyards of Saering and Spiegel as well as vineyards at Bux and Bollenberg. Schlumberger liken the Les Prince Abbes range like their version of a Bordeaux “Second Wine”.

The grapes for Domaines Schlumberger Pinot Blanc Les Princes Abbes are hand-picked and whole bunches are pressed. There is static settling of the lees. The wine is fermented in temperature controlled tuns at cool temperatures to nurture the aromatic compounds in the grapes. After fermentation, the juice remains in stainless steel tanks on its lees for a further seven months before bottling. After bottling, the wine spends a further month in bottle before release.
