Hugel Gewurztraminer “Grossi Laüe” 2014

£44.00

Description

Famille Hugel Gewurztraminer “Grossi Laüe” 2014 is a superb Alsace Gewurztraminer produced from some of the family’s finest vineyard parcels around Riquewihr, particularly the famed Sporen Grand Cru terroir. Grossi Laüe translates as “great growth” in Alsace dialect and can be thought of as equivalent to the German Grosses Gewächs or the Burgundian Grand Cru.

This is a rich, aromatic and beautifully refined Alsatian white wine, with layers of rose petal, lychee, exotic spice and citrus balanced by freshness, minerality and a long, elegant finish. Perfect with mildly spicy dishes or strong cheeses.

Famille Hugel Gewürztraminer “Grossi Laüe” Winemaking

  • Grapes are carefully transported to the winery in small crates to preserve freshness and fruit quality.
  • Presses are filled by gravity, avoiding pumping or harsh mechanical handling.
  • After pressing, the must is gently settled for several hours before fermentation.
  • Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vats at 18–24°C to retain freshness and aromatics.
  • The wine is racked only once before naturally clarifying over the winter months.
  • In spring, the wine is lightly filtered before bottling.
  • Bottles are then extensively aged in the Hugel cellars before release.
  • Residual sugar: 15.46g/L, giving a balanced richness and freshness.

Hugel Gewürztraminer “Grossi LLaüe” Vineyards

Gewurztraminer grapes are sourced from some of the best and oldest plots of the Hugel estate in the heart of the grand cru
Sporen. The soils here are composed of Lias clay-marl, decalcified on the surface, exceptionally rich in phosphoric acid, and the vines for this Grand Cru Alsace white wine are 31 years old.

Famille Hugel: Alsace Wines Since 1639

Founded in 1639 in the historic village of Riquewihr, Famille Hugel is one of Alsace’s most respected and long-established wine producers. Today, the estate is owned and managed by the 12th and 13th generations of the Hugel family. It can be found on the famous Alsace Wine Route near Colmar,

The family owns around 30 hectares of prime vineyard sites surrounding Riquewihr, many of which are classified as Grand Cru vineyards, while also working closely with growers farming a further 110 hectares. The Hugel vineyards are planted exclusively with Alsace’s noble grape varieties: Gewurztraminer, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Muscat and Pinot Blanc.

Hugel’s philosophy is centred on expressing the purity of both terroir and grape variety, producing wines without the use of oak. The family have also played a pioneering role in the development of Alsace late-harvest wines, helping to establish the official regulations governing Vendange Tardive and Sélection de Grains Nobles wines.

Tasting Notes

  • Appearance: Intense lemon-yellow with brilliant straw highlights and dense, voluptuous legs.

  • Nose: Explosive and beautifully evolved. High-toned aromas of fresh rose petals, lychee, and candied citrus peel are layered with wild honey, ginger and a subtle, stony minerality.

  • Palate: Full-bodied, deep, and mouth-coating. It enters with a rich, concentrated texture packed with ripe tropical fruits, juicy peach, and elegant floral notes. While styled dry, it remains remarkably energetic, avoiding any heaviness thanks to a precise line of vibrant acidity and mineral freshness.

  • Finish: Complex, elegant, and exceptionally long, leaving a lingering, sophisticated trail of exotic spice, cardamom, and white pepper.

Food Pairing
