Established in 1973, Seifried Estate is a family-owned winery nestled in the heart of New Zealand’s sunshine capital, Nelson. Austrian-born Hermann Seifried and his wife, New Zealand born, Agnes planted the seeds of their legacy in the Moutere Valley between Nelson and Motueka, pioneering the region’s fine wine production. The first 2 hectares of vines planted included 14 different Vinifera varieties which were all grafted onto phylloxera-resistant rootstock. This meticulous approach ensured long-term success and disease resistance. 1976 was the first harvest, with five distinctive varietal wines being made and, at that time, wine sales were entirely mail order and through cellar door. Their dessert wine, the Sweet Agnes Noble Riesling has won best New Zealand dessert wine many times.
Today, Seifried Estate owns over 330 hectares of established, sustainably accredited vineyards across ten locations. Their dedicated team has grown to include 35 permanent winery and vineyard staff, alongside a further 10 personnel managing domestic sales and marketing. This commitment to growth ensures Seifried’s legacy continues to flourish. All three of Hermann and Agnes’ children now work in the family business.
The wine-producing region of Nelson, at the top of New Zealand’s South Island, offers pristine conditions and, along with specially selected north-facing vineyard sites, offers a range of soils from free-draining gravels to heavy alluvial clays and a climate tailor-made for growing richly varietal, elegant wines. Still, frosty winters, long dry summers, and cool autumn nights combined with the highest sunshine hours in New Zealand. It is known as the sunshine capital of New Zealand.
The grapes for the Seifried Estate Gewurztraminer come from the estate’s Redwood Valley and Brightwater vineyards. The unirrigated Redwood Valley vineyard is situated on a gently sloping, north-facing clay site with vines an average age of 10 to 30 years old. The Brightwater vines are grown in an extremely stony area of the vineyard, 15 kilometres from the coast, where water and nutrient levels are low. The soil here is a combination of rocks and boulders vital for holding the warmth of Nelson’s sun and for ripening the Gewürztraminer grapes.
Gewurztraminer is an early ripening variety with an aromatic, fragrant bouquet. It is naturally a low-yielding vine which can produce wonderful concentration and flavour.
Seifried Nelson Gewurztraminer has a beautifully aromatic nose with classic varietal aromas of roses, Turkish delight and hints of ginger. The palate is equally flavoursome with well-balanced fruit concentration and an off-dry finish leaving lingering flavours.
Seifried Nelson Gewurztraminer is perfect with Asian cuisine. The lychee, rose petal, and tropical fruit notes complement spicy Asian dishes like Thai green curry, rich seafood such as grilled prawns in coconut sauce, or creamy cheeses like Brie. It also pairs well with roasted pork with apricot glaze, vegetable stir-fries with ginger, or light desserts like mango sorbet.
