Jermann Pinot Bianco is an Italian white wine from the Friuli wine-growing region, located near the Austrian border in the northeastern region of Italy. It is bottled as an IGT Venezia Giulia.
Jermann’s history dates back to 1881 when Anton Jermann, originally from Austria, settled in the area. However, the modern era of Jermann began with Anton’s great-grandson, Silvio Jermann, in the 1970s, who revolutionised the winery and the wines they produced.
Jermann’s estates span over 200 hectares, with 170 dedicated to vineyards. The vineyards are located in two key areas within the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region: Collio and Isonzo. The main winery is located at Villanova di Farra in Isonzo, whilst a second winery in Ruttars, Collio, was added in 2007. Marchesi Antinori purchased a majority stake in the historic Jermann winery in March 2021, giving them a foothold in some of the best wines and vineyards in Friuli.
Silvio Jermann’s vision was to produce modern, clean, and aromatic wines. He focused on a precise approach to winemaking, emphasising pristine conditions and allowing the unique character of the local terroir to shine through.
The winery became famous for two white wines: Vintage Tunina and Where the Dreams Have No End. Vintage Tunina was first released in 1975. It is a “field blend” of Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Malvasia Istriana, Ribolla Gialla and Picolit and is considered an Italian white wine icon. Where the Dreams Have No End, inspired by U2’s “Where The Streets Have No Name”, is a benchmark Italian Chardonnay, which is now simply known as “W. Dreams”.
The 100% Pinot Bianco grapes are sourced from southwest and northeast facing vineyards. The soils are a mix of marl and sandstone from the Eocene epoch, locally known as “Ponca.” This stony, calcareous soil provides excellent drainage and allows the vines to root deeply, contributing to the wine’s distinct minerality and structure
The grapes are harvested in September. After vinification, Jermann Pinot Bianco is left to age on the lees in stainless steel tanks for about six months, to add a creamy texture and complexity, followed by a few months in the bottle before release.
From Jermann,
” Pinot Bianco from Pinot Bianco grapes, today a great rarity in Friuli, vinified as a white
wine. It has a golden, brilliant straw-yellow colour. Its aroma is intense, very persistent, and pleasantly
fruity with a distinct hint of melon. Its taste is dry, velvety, well-orchestrated and very persistent. “
Jermann Pinot Bianco pairs well with classic Italian seafood soups and richer fish dishes like sea bass.
It also works well with creamy pasta dishes, risottos and fresh cheeses.
A classic match is Pasta e Fagioli all Veneta, a Veneto-style soup of pasta and borlotti beans.
