Jordan Wines The Real McCoy Riesling is an elegant off-dry South African white wine made from 100% Riesling grapes grown in the Stellenbosch wine-growing region.
The Jordan Wine Estate is located in Stellenbosch Kloof. The estate was founded in 1982 when Ted and Sheelagh Jordan bought the 164 hectare Stellenbosch property. Ted’s son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Kathy Jordan, took over the reins of the estate in 1993.
Gary was a geologist by training and Kathy was an economist. Both had worked in the family winery until 1988 when they went overseas to study at the University of California, Davis. Gary studied the Programme in Viticulture and Oenology, as did Kathy, who also studied marketing courses in the Department of Agricultural Economics.
They returned to South Africa in the early 1990s, built the winery in 1992 and started the journey to becoming the phenomenal husband and wife winemaking team they are today.
Ted Jordan embarked on an extensive replanting programme in the 1980s, concentrating on planting classic varieties. Today, the vineyards are planted with Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling and Assyrtiko for the white wines and Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz and Petit Verdot for the red wines.
Cool hillside vineyards were planted to classic varieties, and a modern family-run winery has combined to produce distinctive wines displaying the ripe, concentrated fruity accessibility of the New World, with the complex elegance of classic wine.
The wines are born out of fastidious vineyard management, innovative canopy management and selecting varieties and clones specifically suited to the various soils and slopes. There are several ranges of wines, including the classic estate varietal range and the flagship range, including Cobbler’s Hill and Nine Yards, also available to buy at Fareham Wine Cellar.
The grapes for the Jordan Wines The Real McCoy Riesling are harvested from 23 year old (Geisenheim clone 239) unirrigated vineyards in Stellenbosch Kloof, situated on decomposed granite soils, 300m above sea level. The vineyards for the Riesling have cooler south- and east-facing aspects, unique in Stellenbosch, and are perfectly suited to the more sensitive and aromatic white-skinned grape varieties.
Jordan Wines The Real McCoy Riesling demonstrates intense flavours of lime through to white peach and Granny Smith apple.
This Stellenbosch Riesling is perfect for Asian cuisine, spicy dishes, or as an aperitif. It also works well with pork dishes with fruit glazes or charcuterie and mild cheeses.
The Real McCoy celebrates the legislative change regarding the naming of Riesling in South Africa.
A lot of South African Riesling was actually made from Crouchen, a grape variety which originated in France and is not related to Riesling. Crouchen also used to be known as Cape Riesling.
Weisser Riesling, as it is called in South Africa, is the true Riesling (hence “the Real McCoy”) with it origins in the Rhine Valley in Germany.
The legislation was amended in 2010 so that the name Riesling may only refer to wine produced from Weisser Riesling.
