Jordan Cobblers Hill 2021 Stellenbosch | Premium Cape Blend Red Wine

Jordan Wines Cobblers Hill is the flagship red wine blend from the critically acclaimed Jordan Wine Estate in Stellenbosch. Regarded as their ultimate expression of terroir, this limited-release Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated blend honours the Jordan family’s multi-generational heritage as master cobblers. It represents the pinnacle of modern South African winemaking and is available to buy now at Fareham Wine Cellar.

Jordan Cobbler’s Hill Winemaking

The grapes for the Jordan Wines Cobblers Hill come from vineyards situated on old decomposed Cape granite soils, which are west-facing, located at 220m, and the vines have an average age of 22 years. The unique terroir and non-interventionalist winemaking techniques combine to produce this premium South African red wine.

  • After being harvested, the grapes are fermented in overhead retort-shaped, stainless steel fermentors at 28°C.
  • Three pump-overs are performed daily over the fermenting cap.
  • Wine is pressed and racked to barrels.
  • Malolactic fermentation is completed in barrels.
  • A selection of the best barrels is made.
  • Wine is aged for a total of 18 months in 225-litre French oak barrels.

The 2021 Vintage Blend Profile

The 2021 vintage of Jordan Cobblers Hill is a classic, sophisticated Bordeaux-style blend composed of:

  • 58% Cabernet Sauvignon (providing structure, cassis fruit, and ageability)
  • 32% Merlot (adding plush mid-palate texture and plum notes)
  • 8% Cabernet Franc (introducing subtle herbaceous complexity and fragrance)
  • 2% Petit Verdot (contributing deep colour and structural backbone)

About Jordan Wine Estate

The Jordan Wine Estate is located in Stellenbosch Kloof. The estate was founded in 1982 when Ted and Sheelagh Jordan bought the 164-hectare Stellenbosch property. Ted’s son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Kathy Jordan, took over the reins of the estate in 1993. Gary was a geologist by training, and Kathy was an economist.

Both had worked in the family winery until 1988, when they went overseas to study at the University of California, Davis. Gary studied the Programme in Viticulture and Oenology, as did Kathy, who also studied marketing courses in the Department of Agricultural Economics. They returned to South Africa in the early 1990s, built the winery in 1992 and started the journey to becoming the phenomenal husband and wife winemaking team they are today.

The Stellenbosch Kloof Terroir & Vineyards

Ted Jordan embarked on an extensive replanting programme in the 1980s, concentrating on planting classic varieties. Today, the vineyards are planted with Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling and Assyrtiko for the white wines and Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz and Petit Verdot for the red wines.

The wines are born out of fastidious vineyard management, innovative canopy management and selecting varieties and clones specifically suited to the various soils and slopes. Cool hillside vineyards were planted to classic varieties, and a modern family-run winery has combined to produce distinctive wines displaying the ripe, concentrated, fruity accessibility of the New World, with the complex elegance of classic wine. There are several ranges of wines, including the classic estate varietal range and the flagship range, including this wine and the Nine Yards Chardonnay.

From Stellenbosch to East Sussex: The UK Connection

Not only are the Jordans recognised as one of the best South African Wine producers from Stellenbosch, they now have a strong UK presence. Alongside their very successful restaurant in London, called High Timbers, the Jordans now produce their own English wines called Tidebrook, from their Mousehall Estate in Sussex.

Tasting Notes

  • Appearance: Deep ruby-red with a bright crimson rim, showing excellent concentration and youthful vibrancy.
  • Nose: Opulent and layered with ripe blackcurrant, dark cherry, and blackberry fruit. Subtle notes of dark chocolate, cedar, mocha and a hint of mint and vanilla from oak ageing add complexity and elegance.
  • Palate: Full-bodied and richly textured. The palate is intriguingly layered with opulent blackcurrant, dark plum, and black cherry fruit, beautifully interwoven with Sichuan pepper spice, subtle herbal undertones, and toasted oak. The 18 months in French oak barrels bring silky, refined tannins, great viscosity and a long, spicy finish.
  • Finish: Long, persistent, and refined, with lingering dark fruit, spice, and a touch of graphite. The tannins are ripe, dense yet velvety, promising excellent ageing potential (8–12+ years).

Food Pairing

  • Beef fillet or sirloin steak (especially grilled or with peppercorn sauce)
  • Roast lamb or lamb chops
  • Venison & other game meats
  • Veal cutlets
  • Aged hard cheeses (e.g., mature Cheddar or Gouda)
