Jordan Wines Cobblers Hill is the flagship red wine blend from Jordan Wines, Stellenbosch, their top Cape blend, the ultimate expression of Jordan terroir. It is a limited-release wine, honouring the Jordan family heritage as master cobblers.
The Jordan Wine estate is located in Stellenbosch Kloof. The estate was founded in 1982 when Ted and Sheelagh Jordan, bought the 164 hectare Stellenbosch property. Ted’s son and daughter in law Gary and Kathy Jordan took over the reins of the estate in 1993. Gary was a geologist by training and Kathy an economist. Both had worked in the family winery until 1988 when they both went overseas to study at University of California, Davis. Gary studied the Programme in Viticulture and Enology and as did Kathy who also studied marketing courses in the Department of Agricultural Economics. They returned to South Africa in the early 1990s, built the winery in 1992 and started the journey to becoming the phenomenal husband and wife winemaking team they are today.
The Stellenbosch Kloof sub-region of the Stellenbosch Valley is now considered to be one of South Africa’s finest winegrowing areas (it is also home to Neethlingshof wines). The estate has vineyards in slopes facing North, South, East and West located at heights between 160 and 410m above sea level. There is influence from both the Indian and Atlantic ocean which brings beneficial coastal fog and cooling breezes and the region has a mild Mediterranean type climate. The vineyards that the grapes for the Jordan Wines Cobblers Hill come from are situated on old decomposed Cape granite soils, they are west-facing, located at 220m and the vines have an average age of 22 years.
After harvest the grapes are fermented in stainless steel at 28c with three daily pump-overs to help extract tannin, colour and flavour. The grapes are pressed into barrels where they undergo malolactic fermentation. The best barrels are selected and the wine is then aged for 24 months in 225 litre French oak barrels.
The 2016 Jordan Cobblers Hill is a blend of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon and 28 % Merlot.
Jordan Wines Cobblers Hill is richly layered and intriguing with a variety of opulent flavours which includes Sichuan pepper and blackcurrants. The 24-month barrel ageing adds viscosity and a spicy finish.
Perfect with beef fillet, sirloin steak or veal cutlets.
