Luis Pato Vinhas Velhas Branco is a white wine from the Beira Atlantico wine-growing region of Portugal. Luis Pato used to make Bairrada wines but fell out with the Bairrado authorities, the Bairrada Vitivinicultural Commission, many years ago. Although his estate is in Bairrado, this is bottled as a Vinho Regional Beira Atlantico, a catch all wine designation for the region that encompasses wines made in Bairrado. This non-conformist approach has meant that Pato has almost single-handedly carried the banner for his region against the iron grip of officialdom for the past 20 years. An innovator and pioneer making wines with class and drinkability, based on regional varieties. Luis Pato has been making wine since 1980. His 60 of vineyards are planted with the red grape varieties Baga, Touriga Nacional and Tinto Cão, and the white grape varieties Maria Gomes, Bical, Cercial da Bairrada (Cerceal) and Sercialinho in the White varieties. Winemaking has recently moved from the grounds of the family house in Ois do Bairro, to a smart winery in Amoreira de Gandara. The Luis Pato Vinhas Velhas Branco is a blend of old vine Bical (50%) on chalky-clay soil, Cerceal (25%) and Sercialinho (25%) grown on clayey / sandy soils. The wine is fermented and matured in stainless steel vats.
