Description

Nederburg Sauvignon Blanc is a South African white wine. This is the new name for Nederburg Winemasters Sauvignon Blanc. It is one of the core wines of the Nederburg Range alongside the Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinotage.

Nederburg has a long wine-making history stretching back over 200 years to 1791 when Phillipus Bernadus Wolvaart was granted ownership of 49 hectares of land, in what is now Paarl, by the Dutch East India Company. He called his new property Nederburgh and immediately set about clearing land and planting vines. By 1808 he had planted over 63,000 vines laying the foundations for what was to become the wine company we know today. Nederburg has changed hands many times through the years but was owned by the large South African wine and spirit company, Distell, for many years. Most recently, in 2023, Distell was taken over by Heineken and integrated into Heineken Beverages, a company created by the merger of Distell and Namibia Breweries. Since 2021 the team at Nederburg has been led by cellar master, and seasoned winemaker, Samuel Viljoen. he is ably assisted by winemakers Zinaschke Steyn, Imellia Prins and Jamie Williams. Nederburg remains one of South Africa’s most awarded wineries and their wines display a hallmark combination of fruit and finesse.

The grapes for the Nederburg Sauvignon Blanc are sourced from vineyards in the Darling, Stellenbosch and Ceres wine-growing districts, all cool climate winegrowing areas with the benefit of slower ripening of the grapes to achieve greater flavour intensity. The vines are grown in granite and sandstone soils, resulting in grapes with a zestier and higher natural acidity, which adds to the freshness and longevity of the wine. Open vineyard canopies bring about greater sunlight penetration of the grape bunches, contributing to more balanced acidity, in turn making the wine deliciously palatable.

The grapes were harvested by hand and machine at 22º to 24º Balling during February and March. The fruit was crushed and cool-fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks at 13ºC for a period of two to three weeks. A proportion of the grapes received skin contact for four to six hours before the free-run juice was drained. The wine was left on the fermentation lees for two months prior to blending. Juice and wine movements were kept reductive with minimal mechanical handling to retain the distinct Sauvignon blanc flavour and quality.

Only plant-based proteins are used for fining, this wine is therefore suitable for vegans and vegetarians.

Tasting Notes

Nederburg Sauvignon Blanc is a light golden colour with a touch of lime green. There are of aromas of a highveld thunderstorm, flinty, grassy naunces with zingy lemon and granadilla notes. The palate has flinty hints with lemon zest and marmalade flavours. Vivacious acidity is poised by juicy fruit nuances with some granadilla and tropical notes noticeable. Well-balanced and refreshing.
