Novas Gran Reserva Riesling is an organic & biodynamic medium-dry white wine from the Chilean wine-growing region of Bio Bio, it is bottled as a DO Valle de Bio Bio.
In the late 1990s Rafael and José Guilisasti had the foresight to see how popular and important organic and sustainable viticulture would become. They enlisted the help of winemaking consultant Alvaro Espinoza to convert their exisiting wine over to 100% organic and biodynamic. More than a decade later major national and international awards are a testament to the quality of their wines. Emiliana has vineyards in Maipo, Casablanca, Rapel, Colchagua and Bio Bio. José Guilisasti also runs one of Chile’s foremost nurseries so they have access to the newest and best clones in Chile. Emiliana is also Chile’s largest organic producer with 250 hectares of vineyards IMO and Demeter certified and an additional 250 hectares in conversion. Voted by Wines of Chile as ‘Winery of the Year 2016’.
The riesling vines for Novas Gran Reserva Riesling the were planted in 1993 at the Fundo Quitralman, Mulchén vineyard in the Bio-Bio Valley, 500km south of Santiago. Grapes are handpicked then placed in a pneumatic press to obtain the different musts, which were kept separate. Once ferment was complete, the wine was left in contact with its fine lees in stainless steel tanks for 5 months, with periodic stirring (batonnage) before being fined and bottled.
