Pehhcora Pecorino Terre Di Chieti IGP (Indicazione Geografica Protetta) is a white wine made from 100% Pecorino grapes grown at high altitudes in the Abruzzo wine growing region of central Italy. It is made by Orion Wines.
Orion Wines was created to bring together interesting wines from small growers and wineries from all over Italy. The company was established by Luca Pomaro and winemaker Alessandro Michelon who retain complete control over the vineyards and growers they work with. The idea is to produce wines from indigenous grapes that express the typicity of the particular region where they are grown.
Abruzzo is a mountainous region bordering the Adriatic Sea and most of the wine is made in the Chieti province, the fifth largest wine-producing province in Italy. The Terre di Chieti region is known for its diverse range of grape varieties, including both indigenous and international ones. Some of the key grape varieties grown in this area include Montepulciano, Trebbiano, Pecorino, Sangiovese, and Chardonnay.
The grapes for the Pehhcora Pecorino Terre Di Chieti come from 10 to 15 year old vineyards, with South and East facing aspects, located at an altitude of 130m above sea level on limestone-clay soils. The vineyards are all trained using the Guyot method. Plant density is approximately 3.500 vines per hectare. The grapes are hand-picked at the beginning of September. They are destemmed and gently crushed prior to being chilled and rested for 18 hours. The juice is then fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks at 18c. After fermentation, the wine is left to rest in stainless tanks for 2 months
.Pecora means sheep in Italian, hence the name and the sheep on the label. Pecorino, like the cheese, means “little sheep”. The Pecorino grape was on the verge of extinction, but in recent years there has been a revival of interest in this ancient variety, leading to increased plantings and improved quality of Pecorino wines.
Pehhcora Pecorino Terre Di Chieti IGT is a straw-yellow colour with some green hints. A refreshing, crisp white wine with sweet ripe fruit of peach and mango with warm spices and minerals. On the palate it has a rounded flavuor, a creamy texture with peaches and an intense, clean finish.
Perfect as an aperitif, with salad, lighter grilled fish dishes and fresh cheeses.
