Prunotto Moscato d’Asti is made from the White Canelli Moscato grape variety, a.k.a. Muscat blanc à Petits Grains. It is a sweet and lightly sparkling white wine, relatively low in alcohol at around 5% abv.
Prunotto is located in Alba, the most important focal point of the Langhe, equidistant from Barbaresco and Barolo, on the right bank of the Tanaro River. The property sits on a smooth plain surrounded by vineyards of the Langhe and Roero regions. In 1989, the Marchesi Antinori family began its collaboration with the Prunotto Company, at first handling distribution and later, in 1994, when the owners, the Colla brothers retired, getting directly involved in the production process, maintaining the excellent level of quality which previous owner Alfredo Prunotto had always insisted upon. One of the most important objectives set by the Antinori family together with the Colla brothers, was to produce wines from personally-owned vineyards and therefore to maintain more control over the final product right from birth. In the course of the last ten years Prunotto has invested a lot, especially with regards to updating its cellars and the technology of the aging of its wines.
The Muscat grapes for the Prunotto Moscato d’Asti are sourced from vineyards in Canelli and Treiso situated on calcareous soils. The grapes are picked by hand before a light pressing. The juice is then fermented until the desired level of alcohol is achieved (in this case 5% abv) before fermentation is stopped by refrigeration. This process leaves a lot of natural sweetness in the wine, rather than converting it to alcohol, and thus produces a naturally sweet wine, with a gentle sparkle. After the fermentation the wine is fined, filtered and bottled. Its low alcohol content makes it an extremely pleasant versatile wine perfect as a pre-dinner aperitif or as a dessert wine.
