Description

Vincent Girardin Puligny Montrachet Vieilles Vignes is made from grapes sourced from vines located near the village of Puligny Montrachet itself, in the south of the Cote de Beaune wine-growing region of Burgundy. The grapes come from a parcel of old vines (55 years old) on a gentle slope with a south eastern exposure. The soils here are clay and limestone with layered subsoil consisting of pebbles and marly soils. Grapes are hand-harvested and sorted in the vineyard. They are then gently pressed in a low pressure pneumatic press to give a slow extraction. After a period of cold settling, the wine is then racked off the must into French oak barrels (228 litres, 15% of which are new) for both alcoholic and malolactic fermentation, with wild yeasts, where it is aged on the fine lees for 14 months.

Vincent Girardin is a dynamic grower-turned-négociant who  moved from Santenay to large premises in Meursault a few years ago, and quality has moved up a gear with him. Girardin is now doing the opposite of many producers: reducing volume and raising standard. For example, he now refuses to buy from growers who use insecticides or herbicides, uses only natural composts from farms in the Burgundy region, all part of his own move towards a biodynamic approach. This wine is bottled according to the lunar calendar (on a “fruit day” to produce a wine with ore freshness and minerality).
