Schieferkopf Riesling Lieu-Dit Fels 2021 | Sélections Parcellaires

Schieferkopf Riesling Lieu-Dit Fels 2021 is a single-vineyard Alsace Riesling from one of the most celebrated parcels in the village of Bernardvillé — and one of the most significant Riesling discoveries of recent years.

In a recent panel tasting published in The Wine Merchant magazine, the three Schieferkopf Lieu-Dit Rieslings ranked 1st, 3rd, and 5th from a world-class field of twelve. Fels took 5th place — a brilliant result that highlights its position as the purest, most tightly wound, and minerally driven expression of the trio.

Lieu-Dit Fels — Vineyard & Terroir

Fels, meaning “rock” or “cliff” in German, sits on extremely shallow blue schist soils (under 30 cm) near the village of Bernardvillé in Alsace. Here, the Precambrian bedrock rises right to the surface, forcing the vine roots to fracture deep into the stone to search for nutrients and moisture.

This stony, meagre soil profile gives Fels its laser-sharp focus and vertical precision. Where Buehl shows broader fruit volume from deeper soils, Fels delivers an intense, salt-of-the-earth mineral drive, tense citrus acidity, and remarkable slate-like grip on the palate.

Winemaking

  • Harvesting: Hand-harvested into 20 kg crates to preserve fruit integrity.
  • Vinification: Gentle, long pressing followed by static cold settling to achieve clear, precise juice.
  • Fermentation: Fermented with native yeasts, followed by complete malolactic fermentation.
  • Terroir & Style: Domaine de Schieferkopf’s late-ripening terroir combined with full malolactic fermentation softens sharp malic edges, enhances texture and mouthfeel, and amplifies the distinct blue schist mineral footprint.
  • Maturing: Aged for 15 months on fine lees in large wooden casks (foudres).

About Schieferkopf — M. Chapoutier in Alsace

Schieferkopf, which means “schist-head” in Alsatian dialect, is the Alsace project of Michel Chapoutier, whose family domaine in the northern Rhône has pioneered biodynamic viticulture and single-site precision for decades. The Bernardvillé project applies this same site-specific philosophy to Alsace’s rare blue schist soils, producing a range of Lieu-Dit wines that express parcel variation with extraordinary clarity. The Lieu-Dit series — Buehl, Berg, and Fels — represents three of the most compelling single-vineyard Rieslings coming out of France today.

Two Centuries of Winemaking, Leading Europe’s Biodynamic Movement

Maison Chapoutier has grown into one of the most respected names in French wine. The family lineage dates back to 1808 when Polydor Chapoutier acquired his first vineyards in the Rhône Valley. Today, the family holdings span celebrated appellations including Hermitage, Côte-Rôtie, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and Gigondas.

Michel Chapoutier’s unwavering commitment to environmental health led him to cultivate the largest biodynamic vineyard footprint in Europe. In Michel’s words, “the complexity in a wine comes from the level of microbiological activity around the vine roots.”

As with all of Chapoutier’s wines, the label also features a description in Braille.

Tasting Notes

Appearance: A striking, bright golden yellow in the glass.

Nose: Intensely aromatic and expressive on the nose, dominated by distinctive smoky, flinty, and racey mineral notes that reflect the shallow blue schist terroir.

Palate: Lively, elegant, and impressively powerful all at once. The palate showcases a refined mineral reduction that elevates the wine’s intrinsic complexity, allowing the raw, stone-driven expression of the Bernardvillé terroir to shine through with crystal clarity.

Food Pairing

Schieferkopf Riesling Lieu-Dit Fels 2021 pairs well with oysters on the half shell, sashimi, seared sea bass, or smoked trout. Its driving acidity and structural power also make it a brilliant match for goat’s cheese, pork carpaccio, or rich, creamy Alsatian chicken with a Riesling sauce.

FAQs

Q: What makes Schieferkopf Riesling Lieu-Dit Fels 2021 different from Buehl and Berg?

A: Lieu-Dit Fels (“Fels” meaning rock in German) comes from the shallowest, most stony plot of the trio, where ancient blue schist bedrock sits less than 30 cm below the surface. This meagre soil forces vine roots deep into rock fractures, yielding the purest, most taut, and minerally focused expression of the three — distinguished by its distinctive smoky, flinty reduction, electric acidity, and racy slate finish.

Q: How does Schieferkopf Lieu-Dit Fels compare to traditional Alsatian Rieslings?

A: Traditional Alsatian Rieslings are typically grown on limestone, granite, or clay soils, yielding broader fruit profiles and weightier palates. In contrast, Lieu-Dit Fels is grown on rare Precambrian blue schist in northern Alsace. Combined with full malolactic fermentation and 15 months of maturation in large oak foudres, Fels delivers a uniquely mineral-driven profile marked by smoky flint reduction, taut linear acidity, and a distinctive savoury slate salinity rather than purely sweet fruit.
