Description

Some Young Punks Monsters Riesling is back with a new black label. I am not sure about the label, it doesn’t really stand out on the shelf like the old one did but, and this is the main thing, the wine is still excellent. The Some Young Punks consist of Col McBryde (voted Australia’s Young Gun Winemaker of the Year), Jen Gardner (self confessed nerdy yeast expert) and thirdly Nic Bourke. Like most amongst the new breed of interesting, young winemakers in Australia they aren’t moved by porty Shiraz and seeks instead a sense of place and restraint the wines, influenced by the best of the Old World and the New. Some Young Punks wines are always some of the first wines that people spot and are attracted to on the shelf due to their funky labels and names like The Quickie, Naked on Roller Skates and Passion Has Red Lips. If you are going to be outrageous and raise eyebrows with your packaging then the wine in the bottle has to stand up to any scrutiny. Which it does. The grapes for the Some Young Punks Monsters Riesling are sourced from three vineyards in the Clare Valley, from north to south, 50% Gully View, 20% Milburn and 30% Moccandunda. 80% of the grapes are whole bunch pressed and the pressings and free run juice are vinified separately. The juice undergoes cool fermentation at 12 to 14C, 15% in neutral oak and using 30% indigenous yeasts. There only 2584 cases of Some Young Punks Monsters Riesling 2014 produced. It has a residual sugar of 28 g/L, which is a bit sweeter than previous vintages, which makes it more of a medium sweet wine.
