Description

Torbreck The Steading Blanc is a white wine blend of three traditional Rhone grape varieties, Roussanne, Marsanne and Viognier. Not to be confused with the Steading Red wine blend!

Torbreck Vintners was founded in 1994 by David Powell and is located at Marananga on the western ridge of the Barossa Valley. The roots go back to 1992 when Powell, who was then working at Rockford, began to discover and clean up a few sections of dry-grown old vines, so that he could buy the fruit for his own wine. The first wine made under the Torbreck label was during the 1995 vintage, with the finished wines released in 1997. Torbreck was acquired by Pete Knight in 2008 and the senior winemaker is currently Ian Hongell. Torbreck’s commitment to traditional winemaking methods, including the use of open-top fermenters and basket presses, contributes to the distinctive and powerful expressions of their wines. The wines are made in a style emulating those of the Rhone Valley and are made from various grapes including red grapes Shiraz, Grenache and Mataro as well as white grapes Viognier, Roussanne and Marsanne.

Torbreck The Steading Blanc is made from grapes sourced exclusively from Torbeck’s Descendent Vineyard on Roennfeldt Road which was planted in 1994. The blend is inspired by by the rich, luscious and mineral scented dry whites of the Rhone Valley. The Roussanne is vinified in stainless steel whilst the Marsanne and Viognier undergo a slow, indigenous fermentation and are rested on fine lees for 8 months in a combination of seasoned and new French oak barriques. The ripe, fleshy, barrel fermented Viognier and Marsanne gives the palate a textural edge whilst the Roussanne contributes it’s more flinty and austere personality. The 2021 is a blend of 50% Roussanne, 43% Marsanne and 7% Viognier.

The wine is names after ‘Steading’, the Scots word meaning a group of farm buildings.
