Description

Tyrrells Hunter Valley Semillon is the little brother to Tyrrells iconic Hunter Valley Semillon, the superb, long-lived Tyrrells VAT 1. Jancis Robinson is quoted as saying “Semillon is Australia’s unique gift to the world”, and Tyrrells make some of the very best.

Tyrrells Wines, Since 1858

Tyrrell’s Wines was founded by Edward Tyrrell in 1858 and, since then, it has grown into one of Australia’s largest and most prestigious wine companies. From a base of 60 acres of vines in the Hunter Valley, the estate has grown to 900 acres of premium vineyards in Limestone Coast, McLaren Vale in South Australia and the Heathcote region in Victoria. The Tyrrell family owns eight of the 11 oldest vineyards in NSW and uses fruit from these ancient vines to craft the wines that make up their Sacred Sites series.

Today, Tyrrell’s Wines is in the hands of the 5th generation winemaker Chris Tyrrell, who took over from his father, Bruce Tyrrell, and who continues to produce top-quality wines and build on his forebears’ success.

Tyrrells Hunter Valley Semillon Vineyards

The grapes for the Tyrrells Hunter Valley Semillon come principally from Tyrrell’s HVD Vineyard as well as other dry-grown vineyards with an average vine age of 40 years. The HVD vineyard is situated between two dry creek beds and features fine sandy soils over coarse river sand. It is one of the estate’s higher cropping Semillon vineyards.

Winemaking

  • 100% Semillon grapes were machine-picked in the cool of the night
  • The fruit was lightly crushed and pressed with a small percentage of stalks upon arrival at the winery
  • Underwent relatively cool fermentation
  • A short time spent on yeast lees, adding complexity and mouthfeel.
  • Bottled early to maintain freshness
  • No oak fermentation or maturation

A modern approachable style of Hunter Valley Semillon, which is delicious when released but will age for many years. Available to buy at Fareham Wine Cellar.

Tasting Notes

Tyrrells Hunter Valley Semillon has a lifted nose showing citrus freshness, the palate continues with fresh citrus and concentrated grapefruit flavours. The palate is light to medium bodied with a perfect balance of fruit and soft acid.

Food Pairing

Try with seafood: grilled or baked fish, shrimp, oysters, or scallops. A good pairing is fresh oysters with a squeeze of lemon. Works well with white meats, poultry and simple salads.

For the cheeseboard, try with a goats cheese (and goat cheese tart or goat cheese salad).
