Tyrrell’s Pokolbin Hills Vineyard Hunter Valley Semillon is a premium single-vineyard wine from Australia’s iconic Hunter Valley. Once blended into Tyrrell’s classic Hunter Valley Semillons, its exceptional quality now shines alone, and it is bottled as a single vineyard wine. Buy this standout vintage at Fareham Wine Cellar.
Tyrrell’s Wines was founded by Edward Tyrrell in 1858 and, since then, it has grown into one of Australia’s largest and most prestigious wine companies. From a base of 60 acres of vines in the Hunter Valley, the estate has grown to 900 acres of premium vineyards in Limestone Coast, McLaren Vale in South Australia and the Heathcote region in Victoria. The Tyrrell family owns eight of the 11 oldest vineyards in NSW and uses fruit from these ancient vines to craft the wines that make up their Sacred Sites series. Today Tyrrell’s Wines is in the hands of the 5th generation winemaker Chris Tyrrell who took over from his father, Bruce Tyrrell, and who continues to produce top quality wines and build on his forebears’ success. They are arguably most famous for their superb, long-lived Hunter Valley Semillon and Tyrrell’s Vat 1 in particular.
Situated just over 2 miles south of the Tyrrell’s winery at the intersection of McDonalds and Pokolbin Mountains roads, the Pokolbin Hills vineyard sits at an altitude of 129 metres. The 4.7 hectare vineyard was originally planted by Reg Drayton in 1970 with Semillon vines and is planted on brown and red podzolic clay loam soils. In 2009, a portion was replanted with Cabernet Sauvignon, using cuttings sourced from Lake’s Folly vineyards. This distinctive vineyard produces the grapes for this wine, the Pokolbin Hills Semillon, and also Cabernet Sauvignon for the Tyrrell’s Vat 8 Shiraz Cabernet blend.
The 100% Semillon grapes for the Tyrrell’s Pokolbin Hills Vineyard Hunter Valley Semillon are normally harvested early. However, for the 2019 vintage, the fruit was left on the vine for about ten days longer than usual to create a slightly riper style.
“Every year, Pokolbin Hills produces some of the best Semillons of the vintage, even ending up in Winemaker’s Selection Vat 1 Semillon in the great years., The 2019 Pokolbin Hills Semillon is the best Semillon we produced in 2019.” Chris Tyrrell
Bottled at a relatively low, and natural, 10.5% ABV, this is a great wine for people looking for a lower alcohol wine. In fact, most of Tyrrell’s Hunter Valley Semillons are bottled with a lower ABV than most white wines.
Tyrrell’s Pokolbin Hills Vineyard Hunter Valley Semillon has appealing straw and green colours. Classic varietal Semillon aromatics; bright ripe fruit and a gentle waxy and citrus
lift. Picking this vineyard slightly later lends to a generosity and depth of flavour. The combination of natural gentle
acid, alcohol and yeast complexity gives the palate a richness, softness and generosity.
Hunter Valley Semillon pairs beautifully with a variety of dishes depending on its age. In its youth, Semillon, with its crisp citrus and acidity, complements fresh oysters, grilled fish, roast chicken with lemon, or goat cheese salads.
Richer, aged versions, with their honeyed and toasty notes, suit richer fare like lobster in butter sauce, pork loin with apple stuffing, or aged cheddar.
