Vachnadziani Mtsvane is a Georgian white wine made from 100% Mtsvane grapes sourced from the Kakheti wine-growing region. The region is located between the Greater Caucasus Mountains to the north and the Alazani River to the south. It is widely recognised as Georgia’s most important wine region and the “cradle of wine,” with a winemaking history stretching back over 8,000 years.
The Vachnadziani Winery, established in 1953, stands as one of the oldest wineries in Georgia’s Vachnadziani village. Its heritage stretches back to the 19th century, when the estate belonged to nobleman Levan Jandieri. During Soviet collectivisation, local workers founded the “Red Cellar” winery, installing 200 traditional Georgian qvevris—clay vessels used for natural wine fermentation. After privatisation in 1994, the family-owned winery modernised its operations with Italian technology in 2007 while preserving its qvevri winemaking methods.
Today, the company produces many different wines from some 25, mainly indigenous, grape varieties. The company has holdings of over 1000 hectares of vineyard in various regions, including Kakheti in eastern Georgia and the Imereti, Racha and Lechkhumi regions in western Georgia.
Vachnadziani Winery’s aim is to preserve its ancient wine culture while combining it with cutting-edge technology. The winery blends cutting-edge technology with sustainable practices, such as planting cover grass to control weeds, mulching soils, and using organic mineral fertilisers.
The grapes for the Vachnadziani Mtsvane come from Kakheti. The climate here is humid and is characterised by hot summers and cold winters. The vineyard is situated at 350 metres above sea level and is planted on clay and loam soils, which provide good water retention properties, sustaining the vines during the warm summers. The vineyard is planted with grass between the vines to help keep weeds down and the soil is mulched and treated with organic mineral fertilisers.
This is a refreshing white wine with a delicate bouquet of apple and citrus leading to perfumed notes of peach and ripe pear, with a mineral and herbal note on the finish.
Perfect served chilled with seafood, ceviche, trout pâté, salads, or milder cheeses like fresh goat’s cheese, milder Cheddar or a young Manchego.
Traditionally, it might be served with Georgian Badrijani Nigvzit, aubergine rolls with walnut paste.
