Description

Villa Mosavali Goruli Mtsvane is a Georgian white wine made from 100% Goruli Mtsvane grapes grown in the Kartli wine-growing region.

The Mosavali Winery has been producing wine since 2018. The winery owns vineyards, totalling around 40 hectares, in some of the best wine-growing regions of Georgia including Kakheti and Kartli. The winery itself is located in the village of Akhalubani in the Mtskheta Municipality of eastern Georgia.

Villa Mosavili focuses on blending ancient Georgian winemaking traditions with contemporary practices. They use “qvevri” (large clay vessels buried underground) for fermenting and ageing wine, a method that dates back over 8,000 years. They also produce wines using stainless steel and oak barrels to offer a diverse range of styles. As well as a winery the site also features a hotel, bars and three restaurants, including one Western and one Georgian, where visitors can enjoy the wines.

The company cultivates several grape varietals (including Saperavi, Rkatsitel and Goruli Mtsvane) across diverse soils with varying levels of sun exposure. In addition to traditional wines, they also produce fortified wines, the Georgian spirit Chacha, and a Georgian brandy. Annual production is around 100,000 bottles. The grapes are harvested by hand and placed in small trays, ensuring that they arrive at the winery in the best condition and as soon as possible. The wines are aged in cellars at a depth of 4 metres which provides the perfect temperature and humidity for ageing wine.

The grapes for the Villa Mosavali Goruli Mtsvane come from the village of Akhaluban where the winery itself is located. The vineyard is south-facing at an altitude of 600 metres above sea level. This wine is made using modern European wine-making techniques and is aged on the lees for added complexity.

What is Goruli Mtsvane?

Goruli Mtsvane is a grape variety native to Georgia, often used in the production of white wines. It originates from Kartli, one of the five key winemaking regions in Georgia.

It’s known for its vibrant acidity and aromatic profile, typically featuring notes of green apple, pear, and citrus. This grape is particularly valued for its ability to produce fresh, crisp wines that reflect the terroir of the region.

When the grapes are fully mature, they have a yellow-green colour, hence the name: “Mtsvane” means green in Georgian. “Goruli” means “from Gori”, the capital of the Kartli region.

Tasting Notes

Villa Mosavali Goruli Mtsvane has aromas and flavours of exotic fruits, particularly pineapple which are complemented by subtle hints of lemon and guava. This lively, dry white wine has a well-balanced acidity with a good, clean finish.
