Description

The Original California Chardonnay

The 2023 Wente Vineyards Morning Fog Chardonnay is a vibrant expression of California’s maritime-influenced vineyards. For this vintage, the Wente family has sourced premium estate-grown grapes from across the Central Coast AVA, delivering a crisp, multi-layered profile that remains the “balanced sibling” to the richer Riva Ranch.

Wente Vineyards holds an unparalleled place in viticultural history; in 1936, they were the first California winery to release a wine labelled as “Chardonnay.” Today, the legendary Wente Clone – propagated by the family since 1912 – serves as the genetic foundation for nearly 80% of all Chardonnay planted in the United States.

The “Morning Fog” Microclimate

Named for the thick coastal mist that blankets California’s shoreline each morning, the “Morning Fog” refers to the Pacific wind streams that moderate the inland heat. By sourcing from the Central Coast, Wente captures the bright acidity and citrus-driven energy characteristic of these wind-swept, cool-climate sites, ensuring the wine stays fresh and beautifully structured.

Wente Vineyards Morning Fog Chardonnay Winemaking

  • Fermentation Split: 50% was barrel fermented in neutral American oak for texture, while 50% was fermented in stainless steel tanks to preserve primary fruit purity.

  • Sur Lie Ageing: The barrel-fermented portion was aged on the lees (sur lie) for 5 months with monthly bâtonnage (stirring), creating a silky, mouth-filling body.

  • The 2023 Blend: Chardonnay enhanced with a small touch of Gewürztraminer, normally around 2%, for a subtle floral lift and aromatic complexity.

  • Profile: Aromas of green apple and tropical fruit are balanced by hints of vanilla and toasty oak.

  • Dietary: Wente Vineyards Morning Fog Chardonnay is suitable for vegans and vegetarians.

About Wente Vineyards

Wente Vineyards was founded by C. H. Wente, a first-generation immigrant from Germany, in 1883. Recognising that the warm days, cool nights and gravelly soils of the Livermore Valley were ideal for growing grapes, he purchased 48 acres and planted vineyards.

Continuing a legacy of over 140 years, the winery is managed today by the Fourth Generation of the Wente family, Eric, Philip, Carolyn, and the Fifth Generation, Christine and Karl.
